rockmeupto125 Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 I'm sure this information is someplace else, but search is not a strong point with this software. I think Swampnut is our premier 3d printer, but I may be wrong as I can't say I've followed threads on the topic as much as I should. So, does anyone have 3d scanning capability? Quote
SwampNut Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 3D scanning is a big thing and I haven't gotten into it. There are no consumer scanners that are great. There are no great scanners that aren't well into four digits. What do you want to scan, and what's the result you want? Photogrammetry with a modern high end phone is said to be quite good. I'm currently sitting in the shop by the printer freezing my ass off, and making shop stuff, and Christmas trees with lights. Quote
rockmeupto125 Posted December 22, 2024 Author Posted December 22, 2024 "freezing my ass off" Oh, its below 70F? It was 6 degrees here this morning, supposed to be 0 tomorrow morning. Guess what I'm doing? That's right, I'm outside pulling batteries out of motorcycles, trucks, lawnmowers, tractors, etc like they were catalytic converters. I had another request for mirror covers for a Honda CBR1100XX (remember those?) and it occurred to me that they might could be able to be 3d printed. 1 2 Quote

You certainly could print a mirror cover. It would probably need exotic filaments or at least a high end basic one. (Exotic is not extreme, but just not the basic PLA you use as an everyday tool.) Look up 3D scanning with your phone and try it. If there were a market, it could be sent to a scanner service for $$ and get back a perfect CAD file. 1 Quote
rockmeupto125 Posted December 22, 2024 Author Posted December 22, 2024 So what kind of money would you be talking from start to finish? Quote
SwampNut Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 I never got a firm price. The scanning seems to run $200-800 I think. It was enough for me to stop looking. Printing is basically nothing. $10? Maybe less. Quote
rockmeupto125 Posted December 22, 2024 Author Posted December 22, 2024 I'm looking at devices online that scan to 0.7mm accuracy for the $300 range. I would that would be adequate for most motorcycle plastics applications. Now a printer that could make a 3 foot by 2 foot fairing panel or nose cowl, that might be a bit more complicated $$$. Quote
rockmeupto125 Posted December 22, 2024 Author Posted December 22, 2024 There was actually a scanned file online for a hinge from a vintage radio shack turntable? Damn. Quote

Dunno. No opinion, and mixed reviews like a mofo. I want one, and saw them on eBay for a bit less. 16 minutes ago, rockmeupto125 said: There was actually a scanned file online for a hinge from a vintage radio shack turntable? Damn. Yup, printed in nylon-carbon and better than the injection plastics you can buy from legacy resellers. Quote
SwampNut Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 I just realized something. The hinge was not SCANNED, it was handmade in CAD. Obviously much easier for a square-ish thing with known edges, not a mirror body. The guy made it without having the turntable, which is a fucking black art. I think he's satan. I told him it was perfect and he was surprised. Dragon for a neighborhood five year old. Also hand made/drawn/whatever. She said she couldn't find a scanner big enough for her actual dragon. He's calling her a racist for all the details missed, like his scaly cock. Fuck, have I been drinking in the shop? Three hour print. 1 Quote

SwampNut Posted December 27, 2024 Posted December 27, 2024 I needed to cut some damaged drywall out with my oscillating multi-tool, and don't want to have dust flying around the house. 2 hours and $2.25 later.... Quote
SwampNut Posted December 27, 2024 Posted December 27, 2024 I don't actually know how to make anything complicated. This is a download, and you can get nearly anything you need already made. 1 Quote
CALCXX Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 Ouch. Is the machine hurt? Hope not. Just a damaged belt? Quote
SwampNut Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 It's extremely unlikely to have done anything more than damage the belts. I've never had to do a belt, but it looks simple and obvious. Tuning is just like my Zero; use a sound app and tune the tension to a frequency. I'll just use the same Gates-provided app (this is a Gates belt too like most). There's a tiny chance that it bent the metal rod. I bet that's $10 and easy also. The problem was caused by their slicer software (takes the drawing and converts/sends it to the printer). It's got more bugs than a Mexican whorehouse. Quote
rockmeupto125 Posted December 31, 2024 Author Posted December 31, 2024 Why not just print a belt? Oh, wait.... printer broke..... Now I get it. 2 Quote
SwampNut Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 1. Acquire printer 2. Print spare parts 3. Have fun Quote
superhawk996 Posted January 1 Posted January 1 Kinda like my first milling machine projects, to make stuff for the mill. Also got to use the band saw and metal brake/sheer. Now that I've added a lathe I should be able to stay busy making stuff for themselves and each other 🤣 1 Quote
