I've come to the conclusion that while I can live with my Ford F250, I want what it it cannot offer.  So I'm going to be looking for a truck that checks a few more boxes than the Ford does.

If you should come across any examples you feel are appropriate, please let me know. I'm not above traveling for the right vehicle at the right price.  In the meantime, I'll continue to drive and support the F250. It's for sale, as another person may have a different set of boxes they want checked. If I come across an interim device, I might check that out just to see if it is closer to my standard.  Right now I've looked at an '03 2500 RAM with the 5.9 Cummins, 300k, 2 owners that took care of it.  All stock except a lift pump and the injector pump has been replaced.  $6500 for that. Anyway...

I'm looking for a GM truck with either a diesel or 8.1 gas engine. I've looked at and would consider anything from an Avalanche 2500 through the 2500 series Silverado/Sierra and all the way up to the GM 3.0 diesel 1500 Silver/Sierra.  The 2.7 Turbomax engine has great reviews and boasts 430 ft-lbs of torque, but I think that's just on the top of the "not enough" range.  The first generation 3.0 Duramax claims 460 ft-lbs, and that's at the bottom of the acceptable range.  I'd really like a well optioned vehicle, and if it has known defects that can be fixed, that's okay if the price is commiserate.  15K for a 300k mile diesel that needs rockers and cab corners AND has not had the injectors replaced is way out of line, I think.

Anyway, this is posted because I value the expertise and experience of the collective, and await the comments and contributions of those who have some experience with these matters.

Oh you shouldn't be searching. I can Google and use FB/Craigslist. I don't expect folks to run around to their local dealers looking for vehicles for me. I'm thinking more of family and friends that have a truck for sale that one knows has been taken care of, not beat on, etc.

Price is based on what it is, and price is a part of my 100 and 200k cost predictions. Later model lower mileage will be more money but predictably less outlay for repairs and service, even though nearly new vs used tend to even out over a 200k mile lifespan predictive cost analysis.

But unless it's a brand new diesel pickup, I can't envision myself going into debt for anything more than $30000 at this point in my life, and hopefully much closer to half that figure. For instance, the 3.0 diesel Silverado 1500 I looked at was $28,900.

Right now the used diesel market especially for models without the need for DEF are stupid highly sought after. Buddy of mine has a F250 diesel he has been tooling around with on selling as he just doesn't drive it much with a company truck. Will see him tomorrow for a meeting and can ask what his plans are.

Impeccable timing but... wrong truck.  You forgot the most critical part of your requirement... 4X4 (or at least that's what you've told me in the past...)  One of my rebuilders tells me he's considering selling his CC 2500HD 8.1 2001 (I believe; the version before the cateye) SOUTHERN (read: NO RUST) Silverado... BUT it's 2wd.  I'll see him next week if you want me to take a look at it.  Believe he has a Ford also but pretty sure it's a non-bulletproofed 6.blow 😂

You want a unicorn and aren't scared of miles, how about an 8.1 SUBURBAN 4X
4!

Thank you, you're quite right, 4wd is one of my larger check boxes. And while mileage isn't a priority, 340k on a gas engine is getting right up there.

That said, I would not immediately dismiss a very good example 2WD.

I've got a rust free diesel Excursion with only 450k 😆

The 7.3 has nowhere near the power of modern Diesels, but somehow it has enough power to pass the repair shops that the modern ones just can't seem to get around.

"diesel"

Plus, it's a 7.3, so the power to weight is about the same as a grom..😜

No bueno.  You would have to pull over for a head wind.

That's because the newer ones are on the EPA plan.

That's why you buy a diesel from the South.  "Sorry, I bought this from Alabama, and I don't know what all they cut off of it but it gets 22 mpg, has 1000hp and 2000 ft/lbs of torque, and is loud as FUCK."

I looked at a CC 4X4 6.7 the other day that had a straight pipe with a tip pointing at the ground behind THE CAB.  Kid was like "Want me to crank it?" I was like HELL NO.  I could hear Greta screaming out the window from her plane from 30,000 feet at this dumbass 🤣

My 2001 7.3L is still out in the driveway after 14 years, from 119k to about 390k. It's considerably more cost to fix when something breaks.

Considerably more than what?

Front caliper $85 Vs F150 at $27.

...of course the F250 can do more because it's a heavier vehicle.

Ahh.  I thought you were referring to the engine, not the vehicle.  And much of the reason that the F-150 is cheaper is because there's more of them around so the parts are much more plentiful/competitively priced.
