It's Kilmer, but Kilmor is what he does to brain cells so it was an appropriate mistake. I'd get over the annoying part if he wasn't full of shit and giving people such horrible information. The Project Farm guy is mildly annoying, but the information he gives is great so the annoyance diminishes. I also like that I can skip ahead to a chart with the information. Quote
jon haney Posted June 17, 2024 Author Posted June 17, 2024 Okay, back from vacation. Checked the speed sensors again, and everything looks fine. Oscar is likely right about it being an ECU issue. I would think it worse, if I had gone the other way with the gearing. Fucking bastards have to control everything. "How dare you change anything on our vehicle without factory permission! Off with your head." I definitely need a better/newer scanning tool. As I understand it, towing in over-drive for an automatic trans is a big no-no, due to possible over-heating (lock-up convertors help a lot with this). With a manual trans, no such issue, all things being equal. In fact, I would argue that 5th gear would run hotter in a 6-speed manual due to higher gear tooth meshing speeds (just read a Cycle World article about that). However, the change would be very minor. Quote

They're not super advanced, but I'm pretty sure they are able to see ABS and traction control systems which might be where the code is hiding. Or it might be in the body control module, not sure if their scanners see it, but it's free so it's worth a shot. If you can verify that it's a speed relationship fault and not a bad sensor, then you'll know to invest your money into having a shop/dealer reprogram the truck's system instead of throwing parts at it. I strongly lean toward it being a programming issue and not a damaged sensor. What scanner brand/model do you recommend between $100-$150? I would like to have something that would let diagnose more than the typical shade-tree mechanic. Also, would a bi-directional scanner let me change the factory programmed gear ratio? And/or let me re-program the speedometer for the smaller diameter tires I run for street duty? For this, I would spend more. Quote

The few Acton scanners I've used I hated so I'd say avoid them, tho they may be better today. 1 hour ago, jon haney said: Also, would a bi-directional scanner let me change the factory programmed gear ratio? I paid $800 for mine after lots of searching to find the best price. I don't know if it can do gear programming changes, and if it does, it's probably only on some vehicles. The list of stuff I can manipulate with it varies greatly by vehicle. 1 Quote
jon haney Posted June 26, 2024 Author Posted June 26, 2024 (edited) Now I have a code for the bank 1 camshaft position sensor (of course it's the harder one to access). Going to replace both. I don't think this has anything to do with cruise control problem, but one can hope. Rock Auto specifically shows a speed sensor for the Frontier automatic transmission, but only wheel-speed sensors for the manual trans. So, logically, the computer had to be programmed to compare wheel speed with engine RPM while in top gear. A change in tire size (which I have done) will not be recognized by the computer, but it could/would recognize a difference if the gearing was changed. I went from 3.69 to 3.36 gears, which is the same ratio used on the non-Pro-4X with automatic transmission. Not sure why Nissan would program the computer to have a fit about the change. I'll entertain some guesses, if anybody has one. Edited June 26, 2024 by jon haney Quote

Assuming it's the same computer just with different programming, it probably needs to have something there...if that makes sense. Like they can't just leave that parameter missing or that input empty even tho it 'shouldn't' need it for any function. Quote
OMG Posted June 30, 2024 Posted June 30, 2024 (edited) I think I'll hide this in here, maybe not many will notice. Tips for saving money driving. 1. Check your tire pressure. 2. Reduce your speed. 3. Avoid a lot of starts and stops. 4. Get rid of extra weight. 5. Don't vote for liberals. 6. Don't drive in California (see above). Edited June 30, 2024 by OMG 2 Quote

Drive electric I've chosen both. If I had a diesel generator I could charge the EV using my dirty homebrew fuel, that would really make the tree huggers happy. Quote
