XXitanium Posted May 4, 2024 Posted May 4, 2024 "Where did people get the idea that guzzling enormous quantities of water is healthful? A few years ago Heinz Valtin, a kidney specialist from Dartmouth Medical School, decided to determine if the common advice to drink eight, eight-ounce glasses of water per day could hold up to scientific scrutiny. After scouring the peer-reviewed literature, Valtin concluded that no scientific studies support the "eight x eight" dictum (for healthy adults living in temperate climates and doing mild exercise). In fact, drinking this much or more "could be harmful, both in precipitating potentially dangerous hyponatremia and exposure to pollutants, and also in making many people feel guilty for not drinking enough," he wrote in his 2002 review for the American Journal of Physiology—Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology. And since he published his findings, Valtin says, "not a single scientific report published in a peer-reviewed publication has proven the contrary." https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/strange-but-true-drinking-too-much-water-can-kill/ Quote
blackhawkxx Posted May 4, 2024 Posted May 4, 2024 Not sure why this is posted in Slapper's area but anyway I tend to go by the pee tint method. I have noticed the elderly (70s-80s) often seem to have issues with dehydration and have wondered if feeling thirsty is suppressed as we age. Quote
XXitanium Posted May 4, 2024 Author Posted May 4, 2024 I was vacuuming and had an aural migraine at the same time (no pain, just distorted vision) I made a wise-crack to SWMBO about not drinking enough water. I figured it would start an elevated discussion - nope. We just went grocery shopping. Maybe I was thinking this might get controversial when I posted it, or my vision was crossed up? I really thought I was being funny. Water should be about the last thing to kill you, unless you're a bad swimmer? Quote
The Krypt Keeper Posted May 4, 2024 Posted May 4, 2024 Ever noticed how drinking all those glasses of water took forever and so tiresome while a 12 pack of beer will just disappear in a few hours? Yes most people are dehydrated everyday of their lives, watching Eddie Hall who drinks a large amount of water everyday to stay hydrated did a health check video and his doctor still told him that he is dehydrated. Fine line of between hydrated and water intoxication. 1 Quote

I believe what you eat and other health reasons can change how much water your body retains so drinking the correct amount would vary between people. 5 hours ago, XXitanium said: I was vacuuming and had an aural migraine at the same time (no pain, just distorted vision) I have had my vision do that but didn't have a clue what it was. Thanks I will look into it. I'll down a bunch of water and it will usually go away. I really don't get headaches unless I do something stupid to my neck and that is just muscle tension. Quote
XXitanium Posted May 5, 2024 Author Posted May 5, 2024 My posts have been appearing in the wrong thread. I intended this to be in Diet and Health. Quote

Where did you get the idea that people generally believe that? I've never heard of this. My necessary quantity varies obviously, yesterday my goal was met but was seriously short because I was doing a lot of work and sweating. Today, I won't need that much. Quote
Zero Knievel Posted May 5, 2024 Posted May 5, 2024 My rule is to go by urine color. The darker it is, the more water you should be taking in. A big issue in hot, arid climates…not so much where there is high humidity. My college roommate worked in New Mexico for the summer and came back with the mantra “clear and copious” for hydration. I laughed and told him it won’t last a month. Sure enough, after a few nights of getting no sleep because he kept having to get up to pee, he came around. Southwest Virginia isn’t New Mexico. Quote
XXitanium Posted May 5, 2024 Author Posted May 5, 2024 I know more than one person that thinks they have to drink 8 quarts of water a day Quote

SwampNut Posted May 6, 2024 Posted May 6, 2024 Bill, are you posting this in response to the ads from the LMNT scumbags saying you should consume more salt and less water? Those fucking fuckers. Quote

blackhawkxx Posted May 6, 2024 Posted May 6, 2024 That was interesting, as I drink my coffee. 2 Quote

XXitanium Posted May 6, 2024 Author Posted May 6, 2024 SWMBO says I have my fax mixed up. It's eight cups or 10% of your body weight? Quote
XXitanium Posted May 7, 2024 Author Posted May 7, 2024 3 pots, 12 cup pots? 3 gallons would be more-ish 4 pots? Back in the '70s, I was on the way to compete in a cross country ski race. Thought it would be fun to get jacked up on Coca-Cola and candy bars. I drank A full gallon of coke, and ate 12 candy bars in a 3-hour drive. I had so much caffeine and sugar in me that my hair hurt. Never doing that again. Would probably kill me now. Quote
SwampNut Posted May 7, 2024 Posted May 7, 2024 I went to a moto event that featured free Red Bull, so I had 11. Not bad, the neon signs all seemed beautifully fuzzy, and I could see my exhaust when the bike was turned off. 1 Quote
