HANKSXXX
Checking valve clearances tonight. Report at 11. You're late...
JB4XX
Most were in spec, cylinder 3 has valves .002 tight, cylinder one had one intake valve with ZERO clearance. Took the cams out, took the bucket off that valve (it is still there), Reposition the shim, not sure if it was off before because it moved when the bucket was pulled. Re-installed everything, now have a tight .004 on that valve. The plan right now: I will torque everything, check clearances one more time, and if it is still .004, I'll try running it again on new plugs and see if knock is gone. cbrxxquad
well that was close., nothing to see on the shim or bucket? Valve looks ok..you could pour some liquid in there and see if it goes away. if it does, it's bent. if it don't it ain't.
JB4XX
I didnt see anything, no marks at all. I may do a little gas down on the valve to test like you suggested while I have the plugs out.
JB4XX
Put it all back together. Fired right up. Adjusted idle speed...any knocking disappeared now... Let it idle and rev for 4-5 minutes. Hit the rev limiter a once. It didnt blow up. I guess I'll start installing the turbo tomorrow. Wish me luck! I have learned so much from this. Thanks Stan and Dean for talking me into diving into the head and cams! BTW...take your plugs out when trying to turn the motor over with the cams out. Kinda like herding cats..in the dark.. I do so love doing this stuff. Shame you can't make a living doing it. But, I never mix work and hobbies, anymore. You could starve. JB4XX
So to sum things up... Redbird was smoking off boost. Enough where we didn't have mosquito problem around here Thought it was head gasket so I ordered one from Cometic only .075 to reduce compression Dean shows up, we find the motor ate part of the oil ring in #3 cylinder So we open up my "spare" motor, and install the new head gasket in it. With the help of a confident mechanic of course. There it sat for 5-6 months...I rode the Concours and Bluebird... My wife said it would never run again and I would probably just part it out. Started working on it so I could get started on the Hybrid XX project so away we go...until I hit a snag summed up in this little thread... Cams in..Cams out...I can check clearances Clarence! Had the cams 180 off, then right, then off again, then pulled them with the plugs out and found out you cant turn the motor over like that. Used up One Billion Cell phone minutes to Stan, Ellixer, Skull and Redbird...Probably missed someone... Spent a lot of quality time in the garage with my 12 year old...and some not so quality moments when things went wrong. But he stood by me. Now he stands by the completed project... As he went upstairs for bed he said...tomorrow we will get the motor in the quad frame, do the A-arms and swing arm ok?? :icon_cool:

matthend
And that is the awesomeness that is this board! Super interesting thread, even if it was over my head for a lot of it. I think I learned a lot just reading the back and forth, just hope i never need it... The time with your son is definitely something that he will remember forever, I bet you are superdad now that you two got it running! Also want to thank Josh for the stator cover yesterday, my bird lives again thanks to him. You are the man Josh!!!!!!

I know this is old post but i had to give my 2 cents. Carburetors taught us the fundamentals of fuel delivery physics. It's like school, if you don't wanna learn you won't. We live in a generation that expects the computers to do everything. So when the mechanics of the engine mess up most these kids don't know what to do. Lol. 🥂 Edited November 24, 2022 by jakebreak Was wrong 1
