New BB owner, please help!!

Hey guys!

I have just purchased a 99 blackbird. I had an 03 a few years ago and sold it like a dummy, so when I ran across this one I just had to get it.

My question to you is this, I am looking at possibly doing some mods to this bike to get it a little closer to a stock gsxr13 or zx14 as far as pure muscle. I have seen the turbo kits, ect, and know I don't want to go that direction. I have done some searching, but havn't really come up with the answers I am looking for. I have seen some mentions of big bore kits, ect. So what are some of the more popular mods to the BB and what does it respond best to? I know exhaust, ect, but I am looking for cams, big bore info, cylinder head porting, ignition programmers, ect.

Any info or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!!

The best answer to your question is nitrous.

Once you decide to go turbo or big bore, it's simply a losing proposition financially. You'll spend the price of the bike to get up to 'Busa or 14 power levels. If you're set on that, ping Northman, he built a NA XX that was right up there (or beyond) current stock ZX and Busa numbers. I hope you have a good line of credit or a college fund to raid, it's going to get real expensive real fast.

I know of a guy in Michigan with a 200HP, bored and stroked motor in a very nice BB streetbike for sale...Complete motor was done by Elton Fish Racing...Hope you have deep pockets cause Tony has $20,000.00 in the completed bike...Probably take half that...Hank

Well, I did see some oversized pistons. I was wondering how far you can bore the stock cylinders and how big of a piston they make. I know I dont want to stroke it. It isnt too terribly expensive to have the cylinder bored and replated. I was kinda thinking a 1200 or 1300 cc setup (or whatever they will offer/will fit) along with some cylinder porting, larger injectors (if available) and a dynojet or some other programmer. What do you guys think? Could you pull 180-190 hp out of this setup? Does anyone offer a better cam than stock? Will the stock cooling system handle that. Would it keep the reliability? Does anyone know if/where larger cc pistons and injectors are available?

I know this isnt the most logical move, but I want to stick with the honda. Besides, its about fun, not logic!! lol

Cylinder porting? It's a CBR, not a CR.

Anyway, yeah, 180-190 HP is doable, that's about where Northman ended up with his build, IIRC. You shouldn't need larger injectors unless you go turbo. I'd suggest you get ahold of a reputable builder and discuss your goals. They can advise you much better than 99.9% of the guys here, self included.

Last time I'll bother saying it- I hope you've got really deep pockets, this isn't an undertaking for the financially timid.

180-190 hp is possible from XX in normally aspirated form, if you actually find someone capable of reaching those numbers.

Judging by your questions you won`t be able to do it on your own,without necessary knowledge even the best parts are worthless.

2mm OS is 1195CC's, IIRC...$550.00 + bore and replate

Cylinder head porting can be $1000.00-$1500.00

A set of cams is $600.00 or so

4 into 1 pipe is $1000.00

Powercommander is $300.00

Clutch upgrades...couple possibilities here

Labor to R&R the motor and disassemble/reassemble is $1000.00

Final tuning...$350.00-$500.00

Final HP at that level 160-165 or so

More HP= more work=more $

Tony paid Elton Fish close to $15,000.00 for his 200HP motor

I disagree about the Turbo being more expensive, BTW.

You also end up with a better mannered streetbike...

I really like the XX too. I actually think it has superior ride/handling when compared to the ZX14, but if I were suddenly bikeless I doubt I would go to all the trouble to build another turbo XX. If I crashed mine so I still had all the parts maybe. Getting the same kind of low end torque found in the ZX14 from an XX is going to be tough. Most likely I would look for either a new Busa or ZX14 or another XX and learn to live with a less powerful bike.

Sorry, I meant to say head porting, not cylinder. I have built so many dirt bikes it is just second nature.

And I have built several CRF 4st engines, just wanting first hand knowledge on this bike.

Thanks hanksxxx. The 1195 setup sounds like the direction I want to go. The turbo bird sounds awsome, but I have NO experience with turbos, but I can do the engine work. If the turbo was a bolt on kit I might look into it. Thanks for all the ideas guys!!

Elton has a stroked 1500 cc motor now too. Think it was right at 220hp NA.

I have built a few and have the stuff for a 2mm over that I am going to assemble. Just need some more parts. Nitrous pistons. Also have a turbo setup that I want to do. But unless your capable of doing the work your self, you should really think about having someone do it for you. I just got done with one, a rebuild, and with parts was 5k.

And the cylinders are not plated, so no re-plating, cast iron cylinders bore just fine.

So how much do you have to spend?

I stand corrected.

I thought the later models were plated.

The 97-98's weren't, for sure.

Not being mean or anything, but people I know who do track will tell you to master the stock machine before doing serious work modifying the motor. Tweaking the suspension to match your weight and maybe a PowerCommander so you can tune the EFI for optimal power is all you should do until you've reached the limit of your riding abilities.

Anybody can go fast in a straight line. Farkling the motor for more HP is (IMHO) stupidity because it has little value in the curves. The XX is almost overpowered for wailing on the curves compared to some other bikes out there.

I have a VFR and 600f4i for the twisties.

Where is that turbo "kit" available from that jb4xx mentioned? I wouldnt be apposed to it if it had good destructions!!lol

Still get your ass kicked by a turbo 'Busa. Just sayin', when you go turbo you are going to be measured against other turbo bikes.

I always tell myself to lose 50lbs to add more hp. That and a 4 into 1 exhaust full system, remove center stand, keep the fuel low, and you are a lot lighter.

I like the TurboCity.com fuel pressure regulator. I went with a 17/47 sprocket set. Already you are a lot quicker and less prone to be caught flat footed.

There are some dropin cams to add some more HP. That is as far as I would go. On the street you can then hang with them big boys.

I had a VFR too. When I wanted to go faster, I bought a Blackbird. So simple, anyone can do it.
