How do you clean your chain?

This is turning out to be a funnier thread than I expected.  Thanks for the suggestions folks.  The reason I asked is that one of my links is kinked and starting to bang around when riding.  I was hoping to clean and lube it really well to see if I can get some more life out of it.  Damn chain cost ~$160.00 bucks to replace as you all know  :(

Should cost less than that.

I bought a set from Sprocketcenter.com for 200+ship for chain and both sprockets.

Ok, I've got an off the wall question...

Does anyone know how many turns of the rear wheel it takes to get the chain all the way around?

When I go to spray the chain, I'm always curious.

Rear sprocket is 45 as stock. Chain is 110 links.

2.4x revolutions of rear wheel.

You guys actually only spray it for one pass?

Anal much?  Nevermind...

no, i got for like 2 or 3...

but 2.5 or 3.5 would be uneven spray. part of my chain might wear out faster then the rest...

Yes. One thorough, anal retentive pass. Must work, my chain has never broken on me.... :poke:

I'm sorry, I really couldn't resist.

Yep, gas, paint thinner, carb cleaner, brake cleaner, all are BAD for o rings.

Just kerosenne or WD-40.

I'm pretty much in the don't clean it camp.

I have been using Brake cleaner sprayed on an old rag, seems to work great and I have not experience any problems yet.

Why does the chain need cleaning???

Just don't lube it and you have no problems with cleaning!!

MaXX

Not sure if your serious but I was going to stay out of this topic till I saw your post, so if your trolling I am going to bite and ask the question that has probably been answered before but I have not serched yet.

Why lube a o-ring chain?????? Don't the o-rings keep the grease they come with inside ,,,,and prevent any that you put on from reaching the rollers.

Would silicone spray help the o-rings live and also prevent any dirt from building as it is slick. This is all I have ever used as I don't want sand to stick.

Don't beat me up to much but educate me why this is not right.

Maybe some links to chain care in reguard to recomended care of o-ring type.

I have always only lubricated non o-ring type. I use them when drag from the o-ring would effect performance.

I had side links plates rust on a chain once.  It was after a rain or a wash and the chain hadn't been lubed in awhile.

I've always figured that's why ya lube - to protect the outer parts - not to lube the inside.

I have heard this too. Trurotor, I was not trolling, but I also wasn't fully serious. I don't really worry about lube on my chain, unless I start to hear it. There are guys on the Mille forum that are emphatic about NOT NEEDING TO LUBE an O or X ring chain.

MaXX
