NQ Rider
Hi I have just purchased a 2nd hand CBR 1100XX (Dec 2003) model 8000 kms on clock - perfect appearance BUT it produces some terrible gear box (whine) noises!!!!! :-o Also gearbox seems very clunky? :-o Is this normal?? I have just given up a Suzuki GSX F 750 to get this and I am a bit concerned as Suzuki was as quite as a mouse and very smooth. Thanks NQ Rider
blackhawkxx
No, this is not normal for the XX. Are you sure that it is the gearbox and not the chain? Inspect the chain for tight links. Lube and adjust. Then, I would change the oil and filter. Try Mobil 1 15w-50 (red cap). It makes for smooth shifting.
MileHi
I don't know about the whine, but the "clunky" shifting is that you're used to the Suzuki tranny (buttah smooth). I too felt that the tranny was clunky when I first picked up the 'Bird after putting many miles on my Bandit. You'll get used to it and will finally not notice the "thunks". As was already mentioned... A good synthetic oil will smooth it out some, but riding it and getting used to a different bike will amke all the difference in the world. 2equis
Geabox whines Give it a smack and tell it to get back in the kitchen!!!!
Violent J
Mine whines in third gear when putting through town, don't know why, don't care, it's a Honda, good to go.
SBBXX
Gees you can't compare it to that Suzuki gearbox, don't even try. Mine's always been clunky. I would change the oil/filter too, first thing. What does the whine sound like? "I wanna go on a cruise"? "We never talk anymore"? Leave the wife at home next time and see if that fixes it. marty
AXXKicker
what they said. i thought for a day or so that my gearbox was noisy, but i just needed to adjust my chain and lube it up. after that, it was smooth as hell as always. ar50racer
Like the others said check the chain and change the oil to a sythetic( I like Amsoil), from there the noise your hearing could be the counter balancers. There is a backlash adjustment that could make it wine if it's too tight.
demon
Just a thought here, but has the front sprocket been changed to a 16 tooth aftermarket sprocket? If it has, then it will whine a bit because it doesn't have the rubber damper on it any more. Wouldn't take a couple minutes to check. Pull your sprocket cover off and check to see if it has a rubber coating on it and then count the teeth.
Helvet
It could also be a clutch problem. Maybe too many sprints? Does the noise go down when you use the clutch?
