    What broke?

Thanks for the responses and suggestions. What batteries will replace the XX Battery on a 97XX? I bought a new battery for Jackie's bike a few months ago at the dealership and it ran me over $100.00
  2. Since I installed the Mototek undertail I just have the cable accessible from the opening in the tail piece on the left side. I just reach in the opening, grab the cable and pull it to release the seat. Works great and was free.

    What broke?

We were riding up into the mountains this afternoon. I was riding my '97 XX. I started to smell something burning,, not sure if it was someone's clutch coming down the hill. It didn't really seem like it was coming from my bike. I hit a bump and my speedometer and tach go dead. We pulled off to a rest area and I turned the bike off, let ot set for a few minutes and then tried to start it. Barely any charge in the battery, the bike barely cranked over and then nothing. I rolled the bike down hill, and bump-started it. The bike fired up and the gauges came back to life. I started riding back down the mountain, covered about a mile and the gauges went dead again. I made it about 5 miles down the mountain and then the engine started to sputter and backfire and then the engine went dead. I coasted about another mile until I hit a flatt spot. I called some friends and we laoded the bike into the back of a pick-up and brought it home. What could be the cause? I couldn't find any burnt wires and there wasn't any burnt odor from the bike. Rectifier? The battery is dead so I have it on a charger. On Tuesday i plan to take it to Honda, The dealership is only 5 miles away. Could I stick the charged battery back in it and make it or should I load it up and haul it?
  4. What brand of slip-ons do you have? I had a similar issue, I just had to rotate the mid pipe a bit.

    Laminate Flooring

Yes I did. Plus I just got new furniture for that room. I am on the Slope right now for some meetings. (Slope: North Slope of Alaska, where the oil is. North of the Arctic Circle) When I return home I'll post some pics.
  6. Wow!!! Fantastic!!! Anytime you want to come visit here in Alaska you are more than welcome. Though I may need assistance on some home projects while you are here.
  7. On Jackie's 2001 XX I had the stock wheels replaced with chrome ones I bought from Josh. I had the local Honda dealership mount the new tires and switch the brake discs over to the "new" wheels. I have noticed lately that the front brakes are constantly dragging. I checked the wheel and discs out today. I rotated the front wheel and determined there was a constant drag on both discs but there didn't seem to be any issue with warpage. Any ideas as to what the problem might be?
  8. Now that is some serious BLING!!!! I need a pair of those, it would go well when I'm riding my 97XX with chrome wheels.

    Cornering Speed

Also, bend your elbows. A lot of guys would panic (don't ask how I know) and stiffen their arms thus transferring their weight into to the forks loading the front suspension and minimizing their actual input. By leaning forward you automatically have to bend your elbows and that can help you relax. Again, this is something I learned and works for me. I think I saw it in the twist of the wrist video.

    oil change issues

Thanks Joe, I feel so much better now. I'm crating it up for shipment this afternoon They were granular. Some were dark, some were light colored and they seemed crunchy.
  12. WOW!!!!! Nice!!! I really like the tile work. The light fixture is great looking too. Nice job.
  13. I changed the oil on our bikes this weekend. I had to buy oil filters and the ones the Honda dealership sold me are smaller than the ones that were on the bikes. According to the parts guy at Honda all oil filters have been superceeded with this new one. Have you guys heard the same? Next issue: The old oil from Jackie's bike was nice and clean, no particles. The oil from my bike had small particles. When I took some out they they didn't seem metallic and when I rubbed them (crushed them between my fingers) they powderized. Was this carbon deposits? What would this have been? Why would they show up? The oil from the filter was dumped into the oil catch pan so the deposits may have come from the oil filter.
  14. I have the Pilot Road 2 on Jackie's bike and my Illinois bike. I like them better than the Metzeler Z6 combo.
  15. I finally rode the bike with the new shock. WOW!!! Much smoother, much better ride. In fact it works better than the Ohlins on my Alaska bike. I left the height alone, it handled well with the 1/4" additional height, it just took some getting used to. My friend Doug couldn't believe I would notice a 1/4" ride height difference, but when you've been riding the same bike for the past 8 years you know how it "feels".
  16. I'll get with you this week. I have the directions that came with it and it shows how to adjust it. I was just surprised that it was longer than stock. ANd I am a bit pissed at myself for not measuring before I installed it.
  17. I bought a Penske shock in the group buy last year but I did not receive it early enough to install it last year. Anyway I am in Illinois for 10 days and now am able to get it installed. I was under the impression it was supposed to be the same length as the original shock, it is about 1/4" longer. Unfortunately I did not discover this until after the shock was installed on the bike. And then it felt too high. That is when I measured an discovered the difference. Did anyone else have this problem?
  18. We put Scorpions on Jackie's bike, I've got 2-bros on mine. Both are great pipes, depends on what you prefer. Scorpions; 2-BROS Carbon Fiber:
  19. What's with that piece of crap alaska bike? If you do sell ithe Frankenbird and need an XX to ride, mine is just sitting at Doug's house. You are welcome to it anytime. That reminds me, good times!!!
  20. Jeff, What are you replacing it with?
  21. Jeff, That is definitely a work of art. It would be a shame to part it out. Whatever you get for it, it won't be enough. I hope someone who truly appreciate's it ends up with it.
  22. Seems a bit strange, set up for touring / distance but only has 9,800 miles.
  23. Thanks. I'll wait till after I install the hugger to install the wheel. The tires I have are Pilot Road 2's so size shouldn't be a problem.
  24. I'm working on Jackie's bike and just got the chrome wheels I bought from Josh back from having tires mounted on them. I'm still waiting for the Pyramid hugger from the painter. I don't remember if it is easier to mount the hugger before the wheel is installed or if it even matters. I wanted to get the wheels installed today. I won't have the hugger back for a week or so.
  25. Great project!! Looking forward to seeing your progress. Depending on how much room you have you may want to consider an overhead projector. I have one with a 106" screen. Movies are incredible to watch. So are sports. (and porn)
