Let me say the best way is to train your ear to know what a fully charged XX or what ever you ride sounds like. After every failure I have had, I realize the old battery just wasn't spinning the starter as fast as it should. Obviously I am still in training.

Hey Chris if you don't have a chain tool there is a master link that uses bolts to do the same as a chain tool. I used it once with no problems over the course of the chains life. Sorry I don't recall the exact name but its out there somewhere. Jeff
