I defer the Octane question. Regarding the XX and Damper's. The XX is a big, well balanced, 500 lbs. bike. I have never, ever, had it shake its head in some crazy manner. If you are going through a bumpy corner, it will move with the bumps but it is very predicatable and confidence inspiring. If I had the $200+ for a damper, I would put it some place else. (JMO). I have a gorilla alarm too. It works well but I wish the siren was louder. It is good for someone touching your bike and them hearing it, but I rarely hear it go off inside a building and you only know it went off because of the 3 beeps. It is good for the money though. MaXX

Madlap, again, really an upper fairing saver in case you tip it over in the garage. Rick had one go down in a 30 MPH crash and did not bend the frame or the mounting bracket, but the intent is not Frame Slider. The Nylons may in fact absorb more energy, but again, I would not bet on them to save my frame. MaXX

I just checked, the Bel-Ray I have is the "Super Filthy" lube. Actually, it doesn't say "Super Clean" so it must just be the vanilla stuff. Hell, I am just going to stop lubing my chain. Had a guy tell me that you do not need to lube a DID VMX (X ring) chain because all the lube is internal, all you are preventing is corrosion on the plates. I asked him why the loud grinding noise goes away when I lube my chain and he said, mine has never made any noise. Come to find out, he only uses Salamander Snot and it is daily as he cleans his chain. I am starting to think that is not that bad of an idea (for the Tuono). Chain life is going to be reduced anyway because of the V-Twin and if it only makes 15,000 miles on a chain vs. 20,000 and it keeps my rims clean (more expensive then a $120 chain), I may convert (for that bike only). Thanks for the responses guys. I must over apply lube as the Maxima Wax was what I was referring too and that stuff is just messy (even just applying it). I will probably try the Bel Ray Super Clean next go round. MaXX MaXX

I will not be responsible for how your bike is broken in, but I do not baby shit!! There is a URL floating around regarding break in that is pretty much just the opposite of what Owners manals say. It really comes down to you and how you feel about it. I do my break in in stages and by 1,000 miles, I am flogging it hard. My first 3 rides are no more then 10 miles (5 out, 5 back) then let it sit and cool completely (heat cycle), Repeat. I usually change the oil around 150-200 miles as there is usually a bunch of metal in the oil (just the oil, filter and oil at 500). After that, I try to keep it below 8,000 RPM's, but I do run it hard and keep it from a single speed for a long time. In addition, if I accelerate real hard, I will often downshift and let it unwind hard. Like I said, after 1,000 miles, giddy-up. Tire Pressure: 34 Front/36 back (for everyday riding) 38 front/40 Rear when Touring. Welcome and congratulations. MaXX

Joe is right, I got corrected on this too. The Platinum's are a thin layer of Platinum coating, the Iridium's are Iridium all the way through. Sprack, leave them alone out of the box, they are pre-gapped (unless grossly gapped like bent electrode or something). You are OK with the Iridiums if all you did was check though. MaXX

What is the best anti-fling, clean chain lube (WD-40 does not consitute Chain Lube in my Garage)??? I have used Silkolene, Bel-Ray and Chain Wax over the years (currently have Bel-Ray in the garage) and I hate how filthy everything gets from the Wax and Bel-Ray specifically (I can't remember the effect of Silkolene). The real reason I am asking is I just bought Gold OZ Rims for the Tuono and I want to keep them as clean as possible. I also want to try to prevent that buildup on the side stand, center stand and generally everywhere the chain goes on the XX. If you can't tell, I spent the morning cleaning up the bikes and they were absolutely filthy. MaXX

Mine came off really fast and easy with the hair dryer and just peeling. I got them as hot as I could though to do it (if you are in your garage and it is cold, it will be that much more difficult). MaXX

I know you have probably checked this (and I don't mean to insult you) but with this being a carbed model, I have found that there is one vaccum hose that runs to the tank that caused me the exact same behavior. I had to stop along the road, remove the gas tank and hook everything back up. Sounds like you have gone way above and beyond that, but that one simple little vaccum makes all the difference. The problem with mine is I hooked it up to a dead (not used) nipple vs. the one it needed to go to. After that, I am useless, sorry. MaXX

I am thinking of trying a set on the XX as it is quickly be relegated to ST for me, but I do still occasionally run it hard. Has anyone compared them to the MEZ4's??? MaXX

No, but I have seen stars and blinding white light when coming down too hard on a wheelie and bouncing my balls off the tank (particularly on the Tuono, damn narrow gas tank)!!!!! MaXX

Yeah, Ken and I were talking about this last night. What I have decided to do (as a Metzeler Bigot) is run the Sportecs until I am leaving on some touring trips then I will throw the MEZ4 on the backi (and leave the M1 up front, I like the grip and on the Slab it doesn't wear to fast). Anyway, have the Avons truly found the majic potion. Mileage and real grip!!! I have only seen Redbird run on the Avons and he had to back off because his backend slipped which made him uncomfortable (completely understandable, I did the same thing on the VFR when I was riding with Chester in Vegas). We were running on questionable roads but Motobeagle and I were able to get moving and hang on with my M1's and his tires (I think they were Bridgestone's, just guessing though). Anyway, you guys with the Avons, not questioning your "spirited riding" skills, but tell me about it. I have seen Chester ride and for those who have ridden with him, you know he can ride well. Randy, the same (what tires do you run anyway, have you tried the Avons???). By the way, I do not claim to be that fast, but it is tough to judge without riding with more of you. I hate sliding a big bike like the XX threw corners, so I am looking for something that sticks, but mileage would be nice too. The M1's, I know will stick, but melts down in 2,500 miles (but only cost $107 for a rear). I am just a touch skeptical over a tire that is getting such high mileage sticking that well. You do not need to prove me wrong as I trust you guys, I just want to be confident before I buy a set to figure it out on my own!! Thoughts??? MaXX

That is interesting regarding the length. I actually thought that was a benefit to Rick's over Jaws. I always thought that the Jaws one's were too thin (but I have never seen them in action either). Just did not want to post anything negative as I am sure both products will do their job. MaXX

I have seen several from Jaws and they look great too. I went with Rick's because I like aluminum (polished too) instead of the nylon. MaXX
