Yes I did it, ran out of gas tonight in the dark. Had to push up small hill then coast down another to gas station.

This proves what I said before, manual says 5.81 gal. only 5.666 useable though. Applies to 97 and 98 XX's only.

I got 6.13 into my 2000 after getting about three sputters out of the motor, then coasting into the station.

On the same subject. I just ran my '97 down 5 miles on the reserve light (I was sh'ing bricks). When I went to fill it up, it only took 4.533 gallons. What's up with that?

Got a total of 144 miles out of the tank at 32mpg. Best mileage I've seen in a while.

Any thoughts of why it took so little fuel.

This weekend, I got 208 miles out of a tank that took 5.4 gallons to fill up on my 1998. I was on the reserve light for 35 miles. Talk about shitting bricks. Over the past 47K miles, I have had this happen a couple of times (when I needed it too). I have only run out once and I was flogging the bike really hard for a full 120 miles and ran out with 154 miles on the trip O.

I went over 200 miles on a tank for the first time ever this past weekend also.

We refueled during the river run. I forgot to reset my odo right away... Drove for 5-10 miles (not sure) and then I reset the odo to 0.

Put 200 miles on that before I made it to a gas station.

So I'm guessing I got between 205-210 on that tank. When I filled it, I think I got 5.6 in.

I started LAUGHING when I pulled into the gas station because I could NOT believe I made it without running out.

I saw the exit coming, and I got ALL excited... Pulled of, and it was downhill to the station. I felt like I had just won the lottery...

Is that a typo, or did you really mean five?? I ran FIFTY miles on the light in the event I described above. I do 30 on the light all the time.

I don't trust the fuel guage at all. I have never run out of gas, but I regularly run 30 to 50 miles with the fuel light on. The most gas I ever put in was 5.3 gallons.

My red light quit working a couple of months ago. I don't really miss it. I don't like a bright red light comeing on when I'm flying down the highway at night.

I also figure I'll have to replace the entire tank unit to fix it. $$$$

So it's staying broke.
