2 qts of 5-30 with 2 qts 15-50???

I want to mix 2 quarts of Mobil 1 5w-30 and 2 quarts of Mobil 1 15-50 to make a 10-40.

I know the 5-30 is energy conserving but it will only be 2 quarts worth and I can't believe it will instantly cause my clutch to slip.

Thoughts?

I know they make a motorcycle specific 10-40 oil but it's $8 a quart. I can buy 5 qt. jugs at wally world for a lot less a quart.

Pete,

Just throw the 15W50 in and forget about it.

I have done it and the bike seems to like it with the primary advantage that shifting seems to be smoother.

So far, no issues with the clutch using either 15W50 Castrol Syntec or the current Honda HP4 20W50 synthetic.

I like the use of synthetic oils in the 'bird. It does tend to get a bit warm in the summer months and the synthetics are better able to handle the heat. I'd like to pull the oil pan one day and weld in a thermometer well so I could monitor oil temperature. I'm too busy riding to do much of that at the moment.

Actually, I think I saw that somebody made a thermometer sending unit for a guage that went into at least some oil drain plugs... If not, you can get a smaller one and do the adaptors to put it into the drain plug hole.

What about the temp gauges that screw into the oil filler hole, in place of the stardard plastic cap? I've seen them for my old CBR1000F, but don't recall seeing them for the bird.

Won't work on the bird, The clutch basket is in the way of the direct path to the sump. I suppose I could make a sheath of the poper length and fit a thermocouple assembly in place of the dip stick. I think I have a contact pyrometer that I could stick on the oil pan just as easily. The gauge is kinda big though.

No big deal, just thought it would be nice to know the oil temperature. Prolly scare myself silly and park the damn bike. Never mind.

why not just buy a 1 gallon jug of Shell Rotella 5w-40 and be done with it.. I have been using it for over 6k miles and like it alot...

Went to that after they changed the 15w-50

Far less hassel and cheap also... $13 a gallon

I used it for one oil change and didn't like the shifting. It was awhile ago, maybe I'll try it again. :icon_think:

Pete I have used Moble 1 15/50 car oil in the last two bikes including the bird.

I ran a comp/leak down on my Bandit after 25000 and it was 150lbs even on all 4 cyl.

Both bikes shifted beautifully.

I ran the same Mobile 1 in my air boat engine/ same results great, no wear.

:icon_think: I ran 20-50 in my 1st XX thinking of florida heat, run recommended 10-40 in this XX and it's more responsive, coincidance?

My new F-250 truck recommends 5-20, I put Mobil 1 30 in it and lost fuel mileage, put 2-20 back in got it back, coincidance?...............No doubt engines with alot of miles on them will benefit from a thicker oil in the heat, old school thought. Today's engines are much tighter tolerances than the stuff we grew up with.
