thetart
Hi all the day after my bikes 25k service, I've been out for a blast in the country, only to find after I got there stopped the bike and had a cuppa, it wouldn't start again. 80 mile from home, the thought ... dam went through my mind. I've diagnosed the fault to two things, the rectifier/regulator and the battery. The rec/reg was pumping out silly voltage which cooked the battery which emptied the acid... all over the road I guess. There was none left in there when I checked. Once I was finally up and running again, I checked my speedo which said 0mph as I was doing 60 (ish ... maybe I guess) down the country lanes. Once back I've took the speedo apart to find out whats wrong. big picture here http://wayne.shacknet.nu/general/100_1816.jpg Possibly a question for someone with a street fighter as it is easier to get to the clocks, anyone any idea what was written on the component on the right hand side and is it a resisitor or diode. The chip on the board still works, I've tested that, but can't read what was written on that component. Anyone with a carb model Bird any idea (or FI model that uses analogue clocks) willing to have a look. Once I've got it working, (I am going to get it working. I'm not paying £200 for a new circuit board) am I allowed to post back what component values were to help out other people with the same problem, or am I breaking the site rules? Cheers A very sad Wayne
exskibum
You're in luck -- I happen to be in the middle of putting my '97 back together, and it was only a few screws to get to. Next to and just outboard of your fried component, on the board itself, is the notation: R2 On the component that is fried, it reads: 180 J M 1W -- arranged exactly like that, except that the M in the lower line is inside a square with rounded corners. Good luck -- a burned up rectifier can do a lot of damage.

Sure, post it up -- info is always good, and I can't imagine how that would violate a board rule -- not like there are many rules in this anarchistic cyber place anyway. I'll post back hopefully with happier news. Cheers
