oms Posted June 25, 2006 Share Posted June 25, 2006 I have a CBR 1100 engine in my OMS single seater. We've noticed clutch slip when changing up from 3rd to 4th and 5th to 6th. Since the car is new to us I'm wondering whether it could actually be the oil rather than the clutch itself and since the oil is easier to change that the clutch I thought I'd try that first. So what is the best grade oil for my engine. It's at 1137cc with flat sliding carbs, not sure what else the engine has had done to it... Thanks in advance for any help! Almost any oil sold these days will be fine in normal duty on a bike. Trouble is, you don't have a bike. Plan on beefing up the clutch and don't drive the thing till you have done so. At the very least, I would go with 20% stiffer springs and I wouldn't put some form of centrifugal assist as too far out of the reahlm. How much does the car/driver weigh? How much does the car/driver weigh? +1 The clutch wasn't designed for the weight and traction of a car. You'll probably have to get a new set of clutches, stronger springs and/or a lockup clutch set. Firstly some technical questions; The oil I'm currently running is 5W-30 fully synthetic, it's due a change so I'll give the grade you guys recommended a go. Someone mentioned a company called MRE, where can I find out more information about them? Do they sell in the UK? Now a bit about the car... It is a OMS 96CF built by Steve Owen in 1996. Steve is the guy who owns OMS racing which builds and sells an assorment of hill climb and circuit cars, I think someone does race one in the US somewhere. Our care is a half carbon half aluminium honeycomb tub with the normal independant racing suspension, wings, AP 4 pot brakes and a lovely set of magnesium race wheels shod with cross ply hill climb grade rubber. The XX engine is mated to a quaife LSD that handles the traction very impressively. He refers to molybdenum disulphide as a component of some oils to further decrease friction. There's debate in the community about its use in wet clutch systems. Even though many of us have suffered no ill effects with its use, you are unique in that there's a great deal more demand on your clutch than ours....so its going to be difficult to extrapolate our data into your use. If you are using a stock clutch, I'd suggest you try the Barnett springs and friction plates. You probably need the metal plates as well if your car has been running like this for a while.
