bturd
i was replacing air filter on my 97xx, when i noticed under the top fairing surrounds there are some plastic flaps clipped in to stop air flow coming from front grills to air box, was wondering if anyone knew why they were there, and if any power gains would be made by there removal :?:
Guest rockmeupto125
The "ram air" on the carbed versions is supposed to direct across the oil cooler. You can connect the airbox to the air intakes, but you need to equalize pressures in the carburetors or you'll run out of fuel real soon. Red J
Unless the airbox is sealed to the ducts in the nose, there will always be pressure leakage. Sealing the ducts to the oil cooler, then fabricating a duct to the airbox, would be a difficult task. Then you still have the issue of the pressure drop across the oil cooler. The system is much better accomplished in the FI birds. Ton of effort, IMO.
Pete in PA
Leave it as is. If you remove those white plastic flaps, the hot air from the oil cooler will go in the engine. Our engine breathes through that cut on the side of the fairing on each side. To ram air a carbed bike, you need the float bowls also hooked up to the incoming ram air. more air in, more fuel needed, pressurize float bowl to push more fuel in, etc. Kawasaki did it with the ZX 11. Honda said too hard to do, and did it with FI.
tomek
Many people went gray, bald and insane trying to jet ram air systems for bikes that originally were non-ramaired.Don`t do that unless you enjoy those symptoms.

The little slits on the side of the faring get more than adequate air flow at speed, better that a lot of other non-ram air bikes, plus its cool air, too 8)
