  1. I've got the black pyramid hugger -- mostly to keep road grime and crap from building up on my shock. Fit great, looks great and no complaints!  TJ
  2. Sounds like it's running rich to me. Check to see if you've got nastiness in your air filter. If not, then you may want to consider cranking in the pilot screw a bit (since the problem is appearing at low RPM) It also doesn't hurt to check carb synchronization.. Just my $0.02  TJ
  3. They prolly wanted to make more $$$ off of you.. The platinums are great! They're doing quite nicely in my '97  TJ
  4. Depends on what your roots are. If you're coming off a 600cc sportbike (like me for example) 6K RPM is nothing. It was very typical to cruise on the freeway at 7.5K on the CBR 600F3. Perhaps that's why I keep the bird around 5.5K. It just feels really punchy there and seems to be quite a comfortable cruising speed for the motor.. TJ
  5. No sweat bud! Glad I could help! TJ
  6. Ok, there has been some mention of hitting plateaus on the low-carb diet recently. So I'd like to suggest a few things you can do to get over the hump. Lets assume you are using a typical Atkins approach.. Then: 1) Your first step is to include a "cheat meal" once a week on the weekend where you can pretty much eat anything you want. This works, primarily, by enhancing thyroid output which can slow under a strict Atkins regime. Lets suppose you've been doing the diet for a while and have lost a significant amount of weight (say 20 - 30 lbs) when you hit a plateau. There are 2 options at this point. 2) Include exercise. Many people say one should exercise to lose weight, but I've found that one can only exercise effectively after a good portion of the weight is lost. People who have lost 20-30 lbs. are ready to move to this step. 2a) Cardio stuff - the first step. A good way to start the process is via cardio activity. These include things like jogging, cycling, swimming, etc. The BEST way to use this to spur fat loss is to _avoid_ staying in the aerobic zone. IE: You want to do INTERVALS and not slow cardio. Slow cardio (heart rate < 120 BMP) is not as effective as interval training where heart rates can achieve 150 or higher. (I typically run up to 180 during interval cycling) Why? Because slow cardio does not deplete the body of blood glucose and stored glycogen (sugars). Doing intervals does! After interval training, your glucose is depleted and your body has no choice but running on fats afterwards. This state can last several hours, and this means you tap body fat stores harder (as ketone production will increase) To do intervals, you alternate between phases of high intensity and low intensity. IE: for running, start off by walking to warm up and then go immediately to 1.5 minutes of ALL OUT sprinting. At the end of 1.5 min. slow down and drop to a slow walking pace for the next 1.5 minutes. Repeat this 5 times and stop. This will give you 15 minutes of intervals and your heart rate will have shot through the roof 5 times. In fact, you will also have "felt the burn", which is an indication that you were running on and depleting stored sugar. If you don't feel like running, swimming or cycling, you can use other "impulse" type sports for a similar effect: basketball, raquetball, and tennis are good examples of interval type sports. 2b) Weightlifting - the best scheme. Lifting is the BEST form of anaerobic training and will increase your RMR (resting metabolic rate) by keeping your non-fat body mass and metabolism high while dieting. There is no better way to drop adipose than lift weights while using a cyclical ketogenic approach. In fact, I went from 217 (powerlifting weight) to 183 (motocross weight) in less than 1 year with this approach and actually IMPROVED my power and stamina. I have spent just as much time studying exercise kinesiology as I have bimedicine and nutrition, so if there are any lifting questions I can try to field them for you as well. It's beyond the scope of this discussion right now.. Lifting is the best choice for dropping fat while low-carb if you have a gym or gym membership. 3) "Fat fast" diet. If you are seriously stuck for a long time and all of the above has failed to get you restarted, then you should consider a "fat fast" scheme. The original"Fat Fast" was developed by Atkins for just this type of thing. (to try to circumvent the thyroid problem his diet induces). Basically for one week you restrict calories to 1000 kcal/day which is VERY low. The only foods you consume are extremely fatty and you need to maintain a ratio of 10% protein, 90% fat with 0 carbs at all times. It's tough but due to incredible ketone secretion you can restart fat loss and NOT lose muscle tissue while doing it. You can ONLY due this for ONE week - no more, or you'll risk retarding your RMR. Here's a link that describes the diet: http://atkinscenter.com/Archive/2001/12/21-237659.html 4) Thermogenic drugs. If all of the above fails to work for you, then you may consider the use of thermogenic drugs. I am going to hold off on describing this now because I don't want people to think it's an easy way out. I will explain it later if someone tries all of the above and still ends up stuck ;-) Alright guys, good luck!! TJ
  7. Cranberry Juice is probably good advice for you. Because, if you continue to take creatine, you'll need it (the acidity) to prevent the development of kidney stones. It's bad stuff for you man, but I'll quit nagging now ;-) TJ
  8. There is some epilepsy stuff on the archive of the low-carb/ high-fat news group I used to run. Here's the link: http://www.cythrawl.org/ketosis/index.shtml Pick "treating disease" then "epilepsy" The basic jist is this: Seizures can be completely controlled by a high-fat ketogenic diet -- even in cases of grand mal seizures that are drug resistant. This is because ketogenesis induces a switch in brain metabolism. It is my belief that ketones are the primary fuel for the brain, and not glucose. It just makes more sense to me given the paleo-human diet. Plus, consider the negatives of glucose brain metabolism: less mental focus, up and down mood swings, uncontrollable cravings, the initial hangover, etc. etc. etc. TJ

Keep 'em, you'll never know when you drop the bike and will need the (cheap) replacements.. TJ
  10. Hmm, I don't see how riding anywhere near 6,000 RPM is hard on the motor. It's near the middle of the rev range for a bike that redlines at 10,800. Riding the bike below 4K RPM, to me, is practically bogging it --> which IS tough on the motor. Plus it's not super safe to do that on the freeway, as you're sorta out of the powerband and can't exercise "getaways" in freeway traffic when needed. I tend to wanna keep my bike in a nice "punchy" RPM when I'm riding, but that's just me ;-) Heck, the bike doesn't even feeling like it's cruising until 5K ;-) TJ
  11. Small is good, remember they indicate "excess" ketone. You want to be excreting them or metabolizing them. Hence, really large amounts are not helpfull Creatine is horrible, all it does is make you carry water weight and can actually damage your kidneys if you don't drink massive amounts of water. It doesn't make your muscles grow, it just lets SOME people store more CP in the muscle (not a bigger engine, just more gas for it.) It's also a temporary effect. Chewing gum is a no-no. Most have tons of sugar or sugar alcohols. Vodka is fine in moderation ;-) Sounds good, but I don't know what "kranskis" are, ha ha.. About 2 weeks tops. Not really, but a good scheme is to eat between 12-14 kcal for each pound of lean body weight (IE: how much you weighed before you gained any significant body fat). Any less than 12 and you'll risk running up against your bodies "starvation" defense mechanism and stall. TJ
  12. Sorry it took so long guys, I had been neglecting this section of the forum, my apologies! Ok, lets see: Sounds good, PM me with it and I can take a look at it.. One thing, you may want to get really strict for a while. Sounds like you've tried carbing a bit too frequently recently. Try to hold it to one meal on the weekends. I won't know for sure until I see what your meal plan has been. Also, don't get too discouraged with a 3 week pause, it can sometimes take over a month for the body to adjust to a set weight level (bodyfat level). If worse comes to worse, and you can't get restarted, I can give you a couple of tips to get you going. (they are extreme, but temporary) -- more on that later ;-) Same advice here too. Have a bit more patience, there can be many issues at work here. The exercise plan you mention will DEFINATELY help to unstick you.. And, in fact, I can give you some strategies for the treadmill that will help you out. I'll pay more attention to this section in the future, sorry for the negligence :???:  TJ
  13. Yep, that's why I'm getting worse gas mileage than everyone else. 80-95 in sixth eh? Hmmmm, guess I'll just have to deal with 30 MPG, 'cause I like staying in the powerband too much in 4th ;-) I'll have to try running in 6th when I head to the hill country (long run) though to see what my peak mileage will be.. TJ
  14. Ahh, that's my prob.. I never drop below 80 on the freeway.. Heck, I never let my cruising RPM drop below 5K-5.5K. Lets just say I like to be near the meat of the powerband ;-). This usually means 4th gear, 'cause 5th is 90MPH and 6th is 100! I like that "sweet spot" I get at 80-85MPH in 4th gear.. Must just be my preference to keep the motor in the heart of the RPM range, as I get crappy gas mileage out of the 1000F too.. (same riding style, around 5K RPM in 5th leads to 80-85mph) TJ
  15. I second that one! My light comes on around 150. What gear do you guys freeway ride with? I never seem to make it out of 4th unless I really wanna ;-) TJ  You're riding too slow.
  16. Dirty air filter, or carbs(intake) outta sync.. My $0.02  TJ
  17. KEWL! Thanks for all of the great tips guys!! TJ
  18. Hey Obby, don't you have a '97 carbed bird? If so, you don't need the iridium. You can use the platinum (which is what the shop manual recommends). I bought the plugs I needed from www.clubplug.com and got them for like $5.0 a piece. Go there and check bud! (I bought 8 of 'em) TJ
  19. Ok, there seems to be great knowledge on this forum about all matters. Sooo, I think I'll piggyback a question on to this topic... I'm looking for some good riding boots too, BUT, nothing racey with stripes, multi-colored, etc. Just a plain, simple, comfortable, inexpensive solid black boot with reasonable protection and good ventillation. I'm not talking work boot here -- I do want something designed or ride use.. Am I dreaming, or does this actually exist? TJ
  20. Glad I could help ;-) It makes sense if you think about it,after all the kit comes with 136 main jets (leaner than the stock 140-142s). The only time I could ever see going 2.5 turns out in TX (sea level, high temp) would be if I had installed a really high-flowing exhaust and the 140 mains that the kit provides. It really does flesh out the powerband, don't it? Just pull, pull, pull, all of the time. I can already tell I'll be going through tires like underwear!  Use high-quality fuel though.. If ya put cheap stuff in there it is prone to knocking around 4-5K rpm. (IE: use gas station gas, not convenience store gas) I'm about to get a free dyno run on May 3rd. Will post the results. I am going to use it to fine tune my jetting, etc. I'm hoping to yank down somewhere in the 140's. I don't expect more than that until I install a good aftermarket exhaust. (hoping to find some cheap Jardines on e-bay, ha ha) TJ
  21. On my bird ('97) the vacuum hose comes off the #2 cylinder and connects at the rear of the petcock to the tit that runs horizontally. TJ

HOLY CRAP! You gotta lotta shit under the seat! If you ever want to kill someone, you know where you can hide the body now... TJ
  23. You guys are screwed! Low beam on the left, high beam backwards -> facing the rider  TJ
  24. Watch for Nik, he's been running around watering a alot of stuff recently.. TJ
  25. Yep! PhD doesn't mean much these days. You wouldn't believe how many times I've had to correct mathematical errors in PhD papers whenever I am collecting research for a new project at work. The biggest problem with PhD. research in the nutrition/food arena is that it's all funded by the agri/food companies and therefore the results are heavily slanted in their favor (at our expense). Trying to explain why high carbohydrate diets are bad for you would take much more time that I can devote. Go back in some of the previous threads in the Horsepower Gain Support Group and chase the links. It may surprise you.. This entire part of the Forum is devoted to high fat low carbohydrate dieting ;-) TJ
