    SICK BIRD

Just verified the kill switch on my 01. Kill switch in kill position, turn on ignition and the lights come on including FI. No pump sound. Bike will not turn over. Leave ignition on and switch kill to run, pump will run and FI light should turn off. I THINK that these bikes have a fuel pressure regulator which keeps a constant pressure on the injectors. If this fails, too much pressure will keep the injectors from opening. I have had this fail on my truck. I suggest lifting the tank again and looking for something knocked loose. A wire or line. If you have another spark plug you could remove one wire, and attach the plug to it. Ground it well, ( a clamp or locking pliers should do). Some ignitions do not do well with a unloaded output, so make sure the plug is in the circuit. If you see spark, then it is air or gas. DO NOT remove a plug from a cylinder and try to ground that plug. If gas is in the cylinder, it can be pushed out and ignited by the sparkplug. Painful, deadly, or burned up bike. Since the FI light does not go out, I am betting on a regulator/ sensor problem. The FI light should go out when a sensor sees enough pressure in the rail. I don't know, but I suspect that the ignition could be cut off if the computer sees no fuel pressure. Good Luck, Craig

    New Bird

A 05, you are so lucky. Follow the break-in rev limit. Change the oil. Keep the chain oiled, and check for proper tension. Wash and give it a GOOD coat of wax, many coats as possible. Some type of tank guard would be good, the paint does seem to be soft. Once broken in, take it easy above 7000 rpm. This bike will change personality on you in the power band. I went from many years on a 700cc cruiser to the BB with no problems. But just last weekend I power wheelied on a cool day in a gear that it shouldn't do. Note to self: I will not do that again. For any bike, any time, get good gear. If you can get track time do so. Even if you already ride 9/10 on your other bikes. Each bike is different, and I think training is the best money spent after gear. Finally watch out when lifting the bird onto the center stand. It is big, and rather heavy. Some of us have.... well shall we say.... let it get away from us. Nothing ruins a day more than a stupid drop off the stand. After that, just ride. The bird is fast and strong and will give you a lifetime of enjoyment.
  3. My friend in New South Wales told me that OZ was used as a penal colony early on. He said I probably could not live up to that standard. Have had work related trips scheduled twice, but always got bumped by senior engineers. A real answer to oil for me is Mobil One synthetic, changed every 3000 miles. They have just changed the blend again, so that may change. I have never met anyone from down under that did not enjoy life, and drank me under the table. It is a place that I intend to visit before I die. I think the best you can do is change with a good quality oil and change often. Assuming that is there are not Platapus available today.
  4. I have heard that the Platapus is very oily. However you must get the extended wear Platapus since they are rare. Can't say for sure. Each time I try to go to OZ I am told that I am not allowed. Their standards are much higher than mine.
  5. Sounds like the sprocket question is answered. Changing the chain and sprokets is easy. Remember to loosen the bolt holding the front sprocket before you cut the chain. I had to get a helper to hold the rear brake to keep the sprocket from turning. A six point socket is better to use than a twelve. Get a good tool to rivet the chain. +1 on the Motion Pro. Take it easy, I damaged my first link by riveting it too hard. $100.00 will get you a good tool, so why not do it yourself. Search should find a number of threads on how to change the chain and sprockets.
  6. Thick Rubber Band? What Thick Rubber Band? Mine floats around under there next to a broken rubber rope thingy. :icon_wall:
  7. Wife just got home from work. She is riding my 1987 vf700 Magna. She hit a large hawk tonight and broke the right side off my windscreen. Bird shit everywhere. I don't remember what model I put on, but it was roughly 18" high, and attached to the handle bars with clamps. With all the Magna owners we have, I figured someone may remember what type they liked and where they got it. Thanks, Craig

    Stuck bolt

For a one time only removal you can use a cutoff wheel in a dremel tool to make a slot for a large screwdriver. Be very careful if you do, the dremel can slip and scratch the fender. I purchased a extractor set from Fastenal that has left had bits, and extractors. They work great, but are pricey, ($70.00). If the bolt is the larger one with the dimples in it, a small punch in the dimples could be used to slowly tap the bolt loose. If it is the upper bolt, I would lubricate it with a breaker product like liquid wrench and try the left had bits.
  9. I really, really want this....... But I better check my lottery tickets. :icon_pray: Taxes not done yet, maybe I can do something with my return. :icon_wall:
  10. I made a poor mans My T vac when I replace my Magna's slave clutch. Found a empty pump spray bottle, (409), and slid the clear bleed hose I was going to use over the sprayer pickup. I just sprayed the brake fluid into a jar. Wife was adding at the reservoir as I bled the system. Worked much faster than pump the clutch handle and release the petcock.
  11. Can a electrical shop rewind a stator? I would guess that wire gauge is the limiting item for power. I will have to ask, if I can ever get into a real town with a automotive electrical repair shop.
  12. R/R = Regulator/rectifier. I trailer to my favorite riding spots, always find a nail when I ride. I do carry a oil filter for each of my bikes. Had a non-Honda split once. That said, I will ride anywhere on my XX and we still take my 87 Magna on long rides. Service well before leaving. Replace chain, tires, and brakes if marginal. I will replace my origional battery soon, because it is five years old. Not because it won't start now, just don't want to be let down away from home. $91.00 was the best I found on the web for a YTZ14S. Steelers want way more. I would rather spend that markup money on gas or beer.
  13. Search forks, Artic Flipper had lots of questions. I haven't done one yet. Warchild had this in the post. Hope it is what you are looking for.Wilbers installation
  14. Just realized something about the bagster site I linked. FRENCH SITE. Colors do not track USA model years. My redbird is a light claret for 2002. But as we say at my company. THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM IN FRANCE. :icon_doh:
  15. Origional CCT? Double Green dot? My origional is still in, but I only have 22K on it. I have a spare in the box ready. Every thing I read says they are done before 25K. I am wondering about that boosted stator. The thought of adding farkles makes me want one. Please ask the next time you visit your Stealer. Talked to a yusau (sp) rep last week. For the 01 plus birds he said there was a YTZ14S battery to replace the YTZ12S. More cranking amps. 230 vs 210. He also indicated that all their batteys came sealed from Japan. It is possible to get a new battery, that has been on the shelf for a while. :icon_doh:
  16. Bagster has a tank bag system that uses a leatherette tank cover and bags. Saw one on a K1200rs that looked good. Hope this link gets you to the CBR version. Bagster XX

    luggage

I will ask about the other extreme. Has anyone used a Uni-Go trailer on a bird. I have seen them on a VFR at the gap, and they list one for the bird.Uni-go motorcycle trailers

    Engine Temp

You will find that the temps will be high in stop and go traffic, or if you are following anything that disrupts the air to your nose. I have seen High temps, 254 or 257? at Daytona. My 01 gauge started flashing at those temps. I felt that the fan was not sufficient, but someone has posted that the water pump is designed to flow properly at higher RPM's. I would change my oil soon, but others might not. Also check the coolant level, you may have pushed some coolant if your radiator cap is a little weak.
  19. I ordered a tire Saturday afternoon, and here it is Tuesday and I have the tire. Great service, good prices. I will buy there again. SW moto tire
  20. I suspect that much of the mileage variations deal with rider style. I am not that agressive, ( can't afford tires every 2500 miles). Wife gets 60mpg on the Magna commuting to work on the highway, but I never got over 45. I have ridden 25 miles after the last fuel mark was flashing red, but have never put more than 4.5 gallons in the thing. I don't know how far it would go, I just know I am too fat to push it home. I hope some day to get to a meet. It would be interesting to put a high mpg and a low mpg on a dyno and see if I got one shy on power.
  21. I plan for 220 miles between fills. This works out well, since the Magna my wife rides does 120 miles before reserve. Mine is a 01, and I replaced the plugs at 20K. Nothing wrong with performance, and they looked great. My bike has always smelled rich at idle and low speeds. Seems to be worse since Daytona, with long, high heat idles. I wonder if I cooked a sensor?
  22. One of my friends loads his Beemer K1200rs using a 2x12 for a ramp. And it is alot heavier than the XX. He bought a small winch that he mounts into the front bed rack holder and pulls it up. Soft ties on the front suspension attach the cable. I would still suggest getting help to guide it up and down. Lots of weight, pretty high up when it is on the bed. Make sure the board is long enough. The XX is low and will bottom out on a steep ramp. As for the bright work. Mine is not clear coated. Any good polish and effort will make it shine.
  23. Not Serious? I can't believe the heat from a spot welder wouldn't damage the O rings and vaporize the grease in the link.
  24. How about rear wheel alignment. Did you move the wheel when you replaced the chain. If it is rubbing the side of the rear sprocket, it might sound different. I use a Motion pro tool for riveting the chain. I have see a local wrench use a tubing flaring tool. He made a steel plate that fit in place of the tubing holder and pressed the link that way. The rivets looked good, but he said it took practice to not damage a link. Just a thought, If tools are hard to come by.
  25. I have read that exhaust and PC's add power. Then I read that they don't , but the PC will eliminate flat spots. I like the stealth of a quiet bike. Since I have the only bird in my area, I don't get to hear the other pipes. Any feedback on noise levels? I have done a little Codes, and need to do more. I have seen good riders blow by superbikes on Motards and Buells that give away 50 hp.
