You can tell if the petcock is opening and closing by applying vacuum with the fuel line off.

I don't understand why the air box filled up. If the float is stuck, the extra fuel should have went out of the carb overflow tubes onto the ground.

One per year is way over the norm. I have a 97 and it had the factory one on until a couple of years ago when I put the R-1 one on. The old one was still good. I don't know this for a fact but I bet that the folks in the south (hot) go through them faster than us up in the north. Have you tested your charging system to see if other problems are causing this?

Keep rocking, both front to back and try side to side. I think everyone has a hard time with that.
