  1. there are two different size stators for the 900 . The bore is smaller on one requiring a different cover. I just went through that on my 900 , ended up with two covers and only one fits the stator. Don't know if they fit the XX or not :?

    clutch whine

Northman I bought the bike as a wreck the left side was damaged ,replaced the stator cover but not the stator so I'm running without a charging system, I didn't notice the noise before the lockup was installed, I did try running it without the lockup it made no difference. As far as a noise upon decel I can't tell because I haven't paid attention to it when racing .We have another race this weekend I'll listen for it and let you know As I stated I bought the bike as a wreck and haven't been into the engine other than to replace the engine covers and clean the carbs. After reading the advice you gave and studying the clutch there are only two possibilities that I can see , it's ether the dampner springs or the fingers in the lockup rattling.

    clutch whine

Northman The engine is stock only gearing , pipe , jets, and a M/T slick . The noise is present at all RPM's only higher pitched as the engine speeds up , checked the pressure plate bearing and it's smooth, with the basket removed and the engine run momentarily the noise is gone ,the backlash gear on the crank is still installed and functioning , the needle bearing in the basket shows no signs of pitting or excess wear , also I did leave the oil pump chain on when I pulled the basket. You mentioned adding spacers to the damper springs in the back of the basket , how is that done without cutting the rivets to gain access to the inside of the retainer plate? :???: Thanks Harry

    clutch whine

I have a loud whine in the clutch area like the gears on the basket and crank are misaligned . With the clutch basket removed and the engine run only mometarilly the whine is gone so this leads me to conclude the gears are the source of the noise. Also with the clutch installed the outer basket can be rotated about 1/8 inch , is that to much free play for the damper springs in the back of the basket ? I don't have a billet basket only stock . The noise is not affecting performance any. The bike is used only for drag racing and I'm launching pretty hard 60' times are 1.59 with wheelie bar , lockup, and two step . :???:

    Runs bad

Thanks northman I removed the tank this evening no sediment, but I'm replacing the petcock with a "T" and drain valve that way there should be no restriction. :???:

    Runs bad

Does anyone have an idea what is wrong with my bird? At the strip after shifting into second gear it bogs at first then slowly accelerates but very weakly and the same in third. I've disasembled the carbs and vated them overnight but no real improvement , the bike had been wrecked and sat for two years before I got it . I had been told that possibly the petcock being vacuum operated was shutting off due to low or no vacuum. :?:
  9. Thanks guys the info from elixxer really helped . I've got the clutch setup like he suggested and the lockup installed all I need now is a good weekend to go to Denton and try the new setup, just trying it around here the clutch now will slip up to 6000 before it grabs which is much better than before.
  10. Has anyone ever weld the clutch basket on the bird ? I'm having a problem with the clutch being graby above 4000 rpm at launch without the lockup I'm assuming that welding the basket will eliminate some play which could be causing the problem :?:
