So my battery went dead, it's been going dead lately. This time it was flat while I was driving (my gps had to go to it's own battery power). So I get to a stop sign and I rev the engine, the lights all get brighter. So I think, well, must be a dead battery, charging system seems fine. I go and get the battery $103 CDN, and get back to the house I'm staying at while I'm away. Whip out the tester and find that even reving high RPM I'm only putting out 12.63 volts. SHIT my reg/rec must be toast. I'm gonna go up to a bike shop and see if they have a replacement. If not, what is that yamaha one I can use, anyone remember?

Got it, and marked it. I'm running over to Toads tomorrow to see what they've got. Thanks!

I also have info on the site in the FAQ about an aftermarket R/R.

So my battery went dead, it's been going dead lately.

If your battery is bad, it can cause the R/R to fail by overworking it. Or if you force it to charge a low/dead battery instead of using a charger.

This problem is a little tougher than you'd think. There are TWO possible causes for your problem:

1) R/R is bad, doesn't put out enough voltage

2) your stator is bad, some of the windings have fused together so it's not putting out enough 3 phase AC voltage to allow your regulator to do its job.

Sometimes....and this is the worst....there can be a combination problem involving both major components:

* R/R dies, pulling too much current to ground....which

* overheats the windings on your stator, fusing them

if you replace your R/R and you still have low voltage, it's stator time.

Anyone have any pros/cons on the ELECTREX stators? They're supposed to provide ~15% higher ampacity.

I looked in the Faq. Doesn't give a lot of detail. I found the webpage and did a search for the part number. Doesn't come up as the same device, so I sent an email to see if its what I'm looking for. Figures this happens a week before the NEXXT.

K, went to a local dealer and got a used VFsomething...500, 750..dunno, rectifier. Took the two greens, combined them. Took the two red, combined them. Hooked up the three orange to the three orange. Hooked the combined green to the single green. Combined Red to the single red. Took the new black wire and put it to a switched power. And BANGO...working perfectly. Infact, I now have 14v idle when I only use to have 11-12 and 14 at high revs.

The black wire operates a gate so that the rectifier only gets electricity when the bike is running. The original took power all the time (I know because I forgot to undo the battery and then cut the power cable and just about melted my cutters).

I'm syced...now off to NEXXT!

Electrex tech support sux!!!! I had heard good things about them so I got one and installed it, went bad before he got to the end of the street. Got a second, it has since gone bad also, putting out 18V. I've been over the Fault Finding chart many times everything checks out good every time. I've called and called tech support, never had a tech call back, no 800 # so long distance to CA. The stator is reading 60VAC on each leg. Infinity to ground. The only thing I can figure, is that part of a coil in the stator separates and shorts out when hot. I can't figure it out and they aren't helping much...... I will try Ricks electrics next. I met Ricks wife at the Parts Unlimited Dealer EXPO, and they seem like good people with a good product. Might want to give them a shot. I'm still open to ideas about my buddies 800VFR if anyone has any......
