  1. My 97 is the same way Same with my 97, but when the light comes on I take 4.8 gallons and the book says the tank is 5.8 gallons Dont even know if the light on mine works... I've ridden for a long time on E and got nervous enough not to pass the gas station. In two years of owning it I'v never seen the light come on... :icon_shhh:
  2. ' Jason, that sounds exactly what the problem was. Audio was working fine just a couple of days ago and I strain the telephone connection when i moved tankbag forward to refuel. It was a short time after that b4 it dawned on me the audio wasn't working (but NOT b4 i was going like a bat outta hell for some distance believing audio was working and i was practicing safe speeding :icon_doh: ). I tried both my hard wire connection (that i use all the time and was strained on) and the smart cord in van (which is virtually brand new), both ending up with identical results Is it safe to ass/u/me if i've never soldered b4 that i'm not good and would be in over my head?... OH YEAH BABY I did some quick web research over my lunch hour and the BEL X65 looks pretty interesting, highly rated and great audio features along audio jack for my earplugs and voltmeter. Give me an excuse to electrify my tankbag, a good winter project. So if u r interested in mine, shoot me a price (i need to reduce the net price of X65 for my spin presentation to el presidente (there always hurdles to leap and flaming hoops to jump thru )). Its 8500 (bought 1 month b4 X50 flavor announced (good timing on my part, eh? )), average condition (will get better description of marks when get home), suction cup mount and smartcord. Will include case and manual if can find the SOBs, uuuummmm , they seem to be MIA (it's gotta be in that house someplace damnit). Can throw in the hard-wire cord too if u want it. Well, I'm not sure if you would be in over your head or not. If you have never soldered before, or even seen someone do it then chances are yes, it's too advanced. It also depends on how much room you have to work with around the jack. If there is alot of room and nothing nearby, chances of screwing it up are much less. If there a bunch of surface mount devices next to it, one screwup and it'll all be over. Also, FYI the RX65 and Passport 8500 X50 are identical in every regard, other than the case and display on the front. They use the same circuit layout, same chips, same sensor, etc. They're indentical units - so if you find an X50 cheaper than a RX64 or vise versa, don't worry. Not sure if you're looking to replace it or not, but I might be able to take a peek at the unit for ya if you wanna mail it to me. Can't promise I can fix it, but I can always take a look. Not sure what the schedule is looking like so far, but PM me and we can figure something out.
  3. Chances are the jack just broke. What happens is when you unplug/plug something in to the jack is that the pin on it breaks. What happens then is the internal beeper gets turned off because the jack thinks there is something plugged in, but the pin isnt making contact so there is no output from there either. If you're good with a solder iron and order the mini jack chances are you can fix it. Hell, before you trade them in let me know - i'll buy them from you for more than $50! Let me know what you decide, I have a good friend looking to pickup an inexpensive 8500 and I don't mind doing the repair, assuming thats whats wrong. I see it happen on laptops alot, so I imagine its the same thing. Before you toss it PM me, I'd be interested in buying it from you before it hits the trash can on the shot that I might be able to get it working again...
  4. Thanks Mike. That's what I usually do. The bearing distributor I use carries Nachi bearings and they match to the #'s listed in the microfiche on both the front and rear bearings. I've replaced the fronts a couple of years ago but forget which #'s they were. I wanted to pick up the bearings on lunch today so I'd have them to change after work tonight. Generally speaking what is a sign you might need to replace them, my bike is just turning 9K and i know they have never been done, a friend of mine that had a CBR 1K told me this is a pretty routine item for replacement. Jet 25,000+ on the bird and 35,000+ on the VFR and I have yet to change either...
  5. Wow, that is a pricy monthly subscription fee - but having radar on your GPS like that is way cool!
  6. Once you set your location you will appear on the map. It may take 2-3 minutes to update... Once you set your location you will appear on the map. It may take 2-3 minutes to update... You currently show in China

    Carbs

That was me. Tried to remove the carbs from the bike to rejet it but never could get them off. Rocked them for hours on end to no avail. Even tied a rope to them and then to a pulley on the ceiling.... the bike started to pull off the ground and yet the carbs still stayed on. Ended up saying fuck it and was able to do it very carefully without removing them. God forbid I ever need to remove them, it's going to the dealer - because there is no way in hell I can get them off....
  9. If you're refering to the 'light knocking noise' that you can hear if you listen closely that comes from what sounds like the bottom of the engine when it gets very hot, then yes my '98 does the same thing. As soon as I get the bike moving for more than 30 seconds at speed (50+mph) it goes away in seconds.
  10. Rotor is NOT warped, the caliper is moving about 2mm in the mentioned directions Where and when?? I'm in Surprise As far as I know I have 0 movement in mine, but i'll double check when I get home today.
  11. Another Arizona rider! They're just coming out of the woodwork this week... ... we need to get together for a ride! Have you checked for a warped rotor? How much movement are we talking about in the front caliper?
  12. .. ask N1k how, after all - he did take the air compressor out of his truck using it!
  13. Hot climate? It was only 114 the other day... :icon_doh:
  14. So I rolled the VFR over 44,000 this weekend on our 600 mile trip and she still runs like a trooper besides a few little things I need to look at, and keep putting off. One of them is the front fork springs. How many miles are you guys going on the springs before you replace them/change the oil? I've put roughly 12,000 miles on the bike this past year with no service to the forks and I dont see anywhere in the service notes that it has been done by the previous owner. The front end feels like it's diving just a tad too much for me to be really comfortable with in the twistes anymore as I noticed while in the Salt River Canyon. I'd like to get it tackled before the heat dies down as I'll be doing plenty of riding then!
  15. The 1 -> 2 shift has the "clunk" as you call it and it's normal. I noticed a small decrease in how loud it was by switching to a synthetic blend, but it's not totally gone. It's normal.

  17. I'm working on some pages for the website including some tutorials on how to do some basic things as well as answering some of the questions we hear day in and day out. One of the things I'd like to help establish is a list of parts that are compatible between years. If you'll post which parts you know work on what i'll begin compiling the list. If you notice an error in someones previous post please let me know. Post something like this... Front Rotors - ( 97-03 ) ( tells me that 97-03 all use the same rotor ) Exahust Header - (97-98 99-03) ( tells me that 97s and 98s use the same, and 99 thru 03 use the same ) Thanks guys!

    HID

    +1! :icon_clap:
  19. If its 'gargling' then you have air leaking in to the system somewhere, most likely a bad radiator cap if you are not losing coolant on the ground. Either that, or your system is moving coolant to the expansion tank...
  20. In the words of Jbowen... "fuck it yo!"
  21. Yep, you are holding the shifter up with your foot. Adjust the way you foot is sitting on the peg and/or get smaller boots!
  22. Ya, I'd like to know how far "out of spec" they were before and after too. The gentlemen I bought my VFR from had them done at 35,000 and the shop wrote down the before and after specs for all four, which put my mind at ease. Only 1 of them was out, and it was barely, barely out. Whats the largest amount someone has had their valves be out? I can't remember anything having a valve be way out of spec...
