Gas Mileage issue?

Hypnotik

Recommended Posts

My bike is a 2002 with RS-3 full exhaust, stock replacement filter, new FPR, and fresh plugs. I'm getting about 140 miles until my gas light starts blinking. Is this normal? <26mpg seems pretty low, it's barely better than my 4x4 V6 truck. If I give the bike a good rev sitting in neutral it puffs out black smoke which tells me it's over-fueling but is this just because the exhaust? I just ordered a PCIII and I'm hoping this will help but it seems like it should be much better. Any suggestions?

For a stock bike....

26 is normal.... if you ride it like you stole it... all the time.

about 33-36 mpg is normal for mixed riding.

and 38-40mpg for highway cruising is normal.

Now, as stated... there are more variables, Like how you ride it, what gearing is on the bike, when's the last time you ran some fuel injector cleaner through it, etc.

My fuel light will start flashing with about 150 miles showing, but when I figure the mileage it comes up about 33-35 mpg. This would be for riding to and from work.

A couple of things to check:

1. Water temp sensor and/or thermostat. If the engine is not warming-up or the ECU thinks it's cold, it will run rich.

2. Have you been under the tank recently? Are all the sensor wires and connectors connected? Is the vacuum line connected to the FPR? If it is, check it for cracks.

Good luck.
