OMG
So, a question for you who have set valves more than once. Is it better to have the clearance on the low side or high side of tolerance. I'm wondering if, with miles, the valve clearance opens up or gets tighter.
rockmeupto125
Valve clearance gets tighter. Its not the stem that wears, its the valve and the seat at the area where they contact each other. As the valve material and the valve seat material wear away, the valve sinks deeper into the seat, decreasing the clearance between the cam and the follower. If you're trying to maximize the intervals between valve adjustment, you'd set them to the greater clearance. You'll also get better torque/midrange from that setting.
