BeerXX Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 The bike suddenly died after a fuel stop. It went fine until I throttled up, and now after reading this board I disassembled the petcock. Here's the cause. :icon_wall: The problem is that I didn't take a pic under the tank before removal of the hoses. :icon_doh: Does any have a pic of a 97/98 petcock with the fuel lines and vacuum hoses attached ? And does anyone have a spare part catalog on file ? I need to get a new diaphragm. Quote
redxxrdr Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 Ron Ayers has a on-line Fische and parts. Prices aren't bad, but they take a while. They tell you this up front. I have seen a couple posts that show the petcock and the line config, It may be in the important thread section of the Garage. Ron Ayers parts manual from Important threads.Parts manual Quote

Venus97 Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 My question is how did this happen? It looks like something tore this rubber diaphram. Did the full pump nozzle do this? Quote

BeerXX Posted March 19, 2007 Author Posted March 19, 2007 I don't know how it got that bad. This is the second part on the bike that has broken. I bought the bike in 2000, and the first part that had to be changed was the regulator/rectifier. That was in 2004, and in October last year the bike suddenly died in the end of a 1100 mile trip. I didn't bother to look at it before now. It is the first time I have taken any body parts of it. I put the bike in every year for service, and it has never died or given me any headache before. I was amazed at how big the rift at the diaphragm was. But now the bike has almost 30.000 miles on the meter, some parts should start to show some wear and tear. 2 parts in 7 years is nothing to complain about. The bird is a sweet and loveable ride. Can’t get any better. Ps. I forgot. I've changed the battery once. Quote
airborneXX Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 Did you have to drain the tank to replace the diaphragm, or will shutting off the petcock stop the flow when the diaphragm is removed?. I'm thinking I should replace mine now as cheap insurance. Quote

I'm thinking I should replace mine now as cheap insurance. I have a small pump, and drained the tank. It's now upside-down on a blanket. It's much easier to work with it this way. The petcock stop at the off mark it shuts of the flow, but a couple of mm offset, fuel flows. Quote

Mine is a 97 and may be it's a good idea to replace it before it leaks... (Ron Ayers doesn't list the diaphragm separately) I assume that with the petcock turned off, removing the diaphragm will not cause any gas to run out? Thanks! -mike Quote

It comes in set with covers at about $31 The fuel don’t run out, but if you flip it upside-down, it flows out of the vent plug. :icon_doh: I emptied the tank, and it had only a splash left. After a day I smelled gas fumes, and the fucker leaked out from the vent plug. I don't understand how it could ?! Work with it without flipping it. http://www.ronayers.com/BrowseParts.cfm?pr...d=16953-ML0-024 Quote
testrider Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 Thanks for the info. So it comes as a cover+diaphragm just like the picture you posted in the 1st post? Thanks again. -mike- Quote
Pete in PA Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 I bought my 98 in July of 99 with 3800 miles on it. I doubt the previous owner was at the petcock and I doubt it was touched since it left the factory brand new. Mine was also torn and ripped, I found it a month or two later when it just wouldn't run right. I think the factory installed them pinched and they rip. I'm surprised it took this long for your problem to surface though. Quote
BeerXX Posted March 27, 2007 Author Posted March 27, 2007 I got it today, and couldn't wait to get it fitted. It runs smooth again. :icon_clap: Damn the feeling was good as first ride for the year. Quote
