At 100+ degree I decided that no jacket is going to help me so I ordered a phase change & evaporative cooling combination vest, made by Techniche: http://www.techniche-intl.com/conte...category/20/58/ This is a vest that uses "cool packs" that keeps the temperature at 58F for 2-3 hours and it's also an evaporative vest that soaks in water. We can use either mode or both at the same time. It was designed for military so it must be better than good. I'm waiting for the delivery so I can't comment on its performance yet. I don't know about military clothing but I'm familiar with military-grade (MIL-SPEC) electronics parts and their quality is way above commercial parts. The thermal energy transfer occurs when a material changes from a solid to a liquid, or from a liquid to a solid. This is called a change in state, or "phase." JohnS Posted August 1, 2006 Share Posted August 1, 2006 The climate there is very similar to Brisbane Australia. I have jad a mesh jacket for a couple of years now and would not be without it. It is cordura on all the panels that are likely to hit the road and has body armour and a back protector. The rest of the jacket is mesh high strength material and lets the air flow through. It really makes a difference but you have to watch dehydration. When you wear a leather jacket you sweat and when it stops working your body seems to limit the output. With the mesh jacket if you are still hot it really sucks the water out of your system as the evaporation is so good. A camelback is a must for a trip. Althought I have been using the same basic principle for years... it's nice to see that someone is actually makeing a condition specific product. first linky no worky... For years I have been telling poeple when it gets hot out... I Zip up. Right after I soak my t-shirt (and sometimes more) in water. Then go riding with a few select vents open to control the cooling and evaporation rate. Basically I turn my Leather Jacket into a Evaporative Cooler. Then you can also carry some small water bottle and re-wet mid ride if need be. Works great! But if you don't want to get all wet.... maybe the Vest. Warning! That vest looks like it may contain those absorbant water polyners... like these... http://www.digahole.com/stamoist.htm if so... get ready for a stinky vest. Canadian Bird Posted August 1, 2006 Share Posted August 1, 2006 This is how I deal with hot weather riding. I ditched a black helmet for a silver one. I have a Joe Rocket leather and mesh perforated jacket. Unfortunately it's black. I bought an L,XL,XXL, XXXL which ever fits, long sleeve Nike "tech", white shirt which I pull over the jacket. It cools my body temp noticeably. It actually works especially when the temp rises above 30 C. + for wetting the shirt under your jacket, also a tech, wick away type. Stop frequently and drink cool/cold h2o!! + for a Camal Back. Avoid coffee and cola's. However that said I do drink Red Bull when I'm touring. Now 30-35 C is the upper range of the temps in BC/Albta/Wash. Unfortunately black leather sucks up the heat.
