XX Luggage+Rack options

Some guys with soft bags apply self-stick plastic or tape over the rear cowl when using their luggage. You might want to consider it if you like your current system.

I think you should sell the Chase Harper set to me (cheap) and buy the Givi's for yourself !!

I have plenty of the Vinyl tape to put on the plastics when traveling

What kind of tape are you guys talking about? Like that clear stuff advertised as headlight protection film? I 'm pretty sure you're not refering to clar packing tape, right?

I seem to recall from an earlier thread that someone was using a black or clear stuff someone was using as a make your own tank protector. And that they bought it in sheets and cut out thier own shapes to fit the profile of the tank... not sure if this was magnetic or not...

This would definately be the cheapest answer to my luggage question. I do like my current setup except for two things. One is that they are not lockable and the other is that they are not waterproof. However, since I don't have the cash for anything else I may have to live with this until I can scrape up enough money to switch.

Thanks for the suggestions!

<snip> Try the UK Bird site, you will get many opinions and some pictures.

Thanks! I will definately poke around over there and see what they have to say.

I've seen some references to Kappa luggage, but it seems that there are no US distributors that I coud find (except one in the Bahamas). From what I've read, they are a subsidiary of Givi and are basically the same, but at a lower cost. Anyone have any more info regarding this??

the tape is the same as black electrical tape but comes in different colors and is vinyl so it peels off easily.

I got a roll of the red from an electrical supply shop that is 4 inches wide.

By the way I just ordered a tri-pak setup from chase harper myself. I like the lifetime guarantee. Not the prettiest but very functional . Saddle bags alone, trunk alone or both together. And only ugly when I really need them.

I have a Givi Wingrack with 2 E360's and an E52 top box. It is very well designed and makes traveling on the XX muck less of an issue. I never have to worry about leaving the bike and having my luggage walk away. It works great, and is waterproof. I keep one bag on the top rack for my spare gear and add the side bags for trips. I do have a extra Wingrack and kit for the XX that I would sell if you are interested in going the Givi route. PM me if you are interested.

I keep the Ventura rack on my bike all the time, but I already had Oxford soft bags. They are OK, engineering a little more could've provided a most excellent system.

One nice thing about the ventura rack os that you can affix a milk crate (spray painted an attractive and speedy black) to the rack with a few hose clamps for that "sophisticated" look when you are in the company of posers. You INSTANTLY stand apart from the crowd!!

If anyone is up to a little fabricating you could do what I did and use a set of Ducatti bags with Motech racks on the bird. I picked up the bags on ebay for about $250US with the racks included. About three hours of having to think a bit and they were on. They look good on the bike, don't effect performance and are fully watertight. It was a mod that sets the bike apart, especially until I get time to get rid of the Ducatti logo...keeps everyone confused. Just my .02 http://www.cbr1100xx.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=34747.

Thanks for all the replies!

Fortunately, my decision has been but off indefinately. Yesterday, I had a contractor over to replace the exterior aluminum window trim that was damaged by hail, and when he took off the old trim, the wood window frame underneath was completely rotted out. It seem the contractor used by the previous owner had installed the windows and trim incorrrectly 6 years ago; allowing water to get behind and cause major damage. With 15 windows to repair/replace in my house, the money I would have spent on luggage has evaporated. :icon_frown:

In the mean time, I'll just find some tape to protect the bike and use my soft bags. If/when I do get a few extra bucks, I've decided to go with the SW-motech toprack and hopefully find a Givi topcase off ebay. Or, I'll just give that cheap JC Whitney case a try.

Thanks again!

FWIW, I bought 3 of these large 40 liter hard bags:

...recently at $80/pop - that's 120 liters of lockable, weatherproof storage for $240 - probably cheaper if you can find 'em on ebay. They're basically Givi hard bags without the Givi logo; the plastic grade/thickness and locking mechanism(s) are very comparable to the name brand stuff.

I already mounted one as a top trunk - simply removed the passenger grab rail and bent a piece of 0.080" aluminum to fit, attached using the grab rail mounting bolts. Very secure and I spent about $2 in aluminum the rack (yeah, I'm a cheapskate PA Yankee..). The included mounting plate makes fabricating the parts that attach to your bike a breeze!

I'll have to fabricate something a little more elaborate for using the other 2 as side bags, but it will mostly involve careful measuring and cutting of some steel or aluminum - probably won't even have to break out the welder! I'll definitely be using some pics of the SW Motech sideracks as design inspiration...
