tyzo
Not to step in but.... weight is a terible way to gauge your progress. My first comment would be to throw away your scale. I would have jumped on your little bandwagon earlier but I don't really want to loose much weight...just drop my bodyfat from 12% to 6%. A scale is bad because you could fluctuate 2-5 lbs in any given time during the day just in water weight. Use a tape measure (soft), a picture, how your clothes fit, a bodyfat test to see how you are progressing...not the scale. Make sure you are drinking .66 times your bodyweight in ounces of water per day. THis will do several things....flush your body of toxins if you have increased your protein intake, you will retain less water weight, you will burn more fat, and you will be more hydrated. To loose bodyfat...you need to eat right (5-6 times a day to increase your metabolism and eat the right foods), do cardiovascular exercise to burn calories, and have resistive training to build muscle. Note to women....you don't have to worry about looking like a muscle chick if you lift weights...a woman has to workout 3 times as hard as a man becuase you don't produce Testoserone. Lifting weights will actually make you more firm without necessarily making you weight less. Remember, muscle weighs more than fat. THink of it this way...it's easy to gain fat...but fat burn no calories and it's hard to loose. Where ever you gained the fat first...that's where it will come off last. It takes time to build quality muscle but you can burn like 50 calories per pound when you are sitting in a chair. But if you don't keep working out, you can also loose the muscle pretty easy. No.... muscle gained does not change into fat when you quit working out. It's just easier to gain fat. And you need to expend 3500 calories during exercise to burn just 1 lb of fat over and above what you are eating. You have to eat to loose and eat to gain...it's a crazy cycle. I can post more on how to eat...what food to eat...how to figure out how many calories to eat...etc if you all would like.
xxtailweight
Actually, one thing I've kind of been having trouble with is being able to figure out rough estimates of calories. I have an eating/ exercise plan that I'm feeling really good about, but sometimes it's hard to tell about how many calories I'm eating. I live on campus and therefor eat in the cafeteria the majority of the time and the cafeteria that I go to doesn't list nutrition info anywhere. Could you recommend a good calorie calculator online or something of that nature?

Redd
Tyzo.... Weight can be a bad way to guage progress....but if you have alot to lose it can be helpful. Weight can fluctuate many pounds a day! Here is an article....about why if anyone wants to read.....to understand why your scale may be lying to you.... Why the scale lies.... EVLXX
I'm really thinking that maybe I should join you all... I jumped on the scale last night and went... I'm check again a couple of more times and let you know what I plan on doing. Keep up the good work everybody. And so far I think Richard Cranium has given the baest advise... 5-6 "small" healthy meals a day, with the emphasis on low fat protien, fruits and vegtables, and lots of water or unsweated tea. Flitemdic
Tyzo- hit me man. I'll take whatever you've got. I use Dr. MacDonald's Hilton Head Metabolism Diet right now, and use the scale until I'm down to around 210, and then go by exactly what you said. Unfortunately, I'm well above that right now. I'm using the diet from about 1986, when he first published. It's probably been updated a million times by now. Anyway, down 3.2 for the week, Redd. Move my marker. Obby
Here is a good article my sister sent to me... The Secrets of Thin People Good read... I like the part about eating more frequently ... Quote: The National Weight Control Registry (NWCR), an ongoing study of how more than 5,000 people keep off the weight they’ve lost long-term, has found that successful weight maintainers tend to eat five small meals a day rather than three squares, which may make it easier to scale down portions. Still holding steady at 223lbs here. Maybe lost 1lbs, my scale sucks. My pants are looser, but the scales not showing much. Go figure??? :icon_think:

Mikey
Well, first I put 4lbs on to be realistic. I could really loose 10 (shshsh don't tell anyone). My habits? No excercise. Like cream in my coffee. Eat candy, chocolate and high fat foods like they are going out of style. Pretty common sense really. However.... I've spent 2 weeks in the past, eating only low fat foods, salads, cutting back on carbs, etc and my weight didn't change so that's where I get got. However, now that I'm typing it out, I never really got my ass up and did anything. Maybe that's the ticket. But how much? I don't want to join a gym and waste the money. I have a bike, but I don't know how far I should bike. I have Alex I can push around in his buggy, but how far do I go and how often? I have stuff to do and don't always have time to exercise. Maybe lypo suction :]
Redd
Congrats Joelmikel!!!! Updating stats.... Mikey, The best I can reccommend for you is the eat lean meats and veggies and whole grains..but have portion control....and if you have the time...eating 5 or 6 small meals would be even better. Dont freak out on the cream in the coffee..1 or 2 cups isnt going to kill you. Dont eat a large meal and go to bed, but that is a given, stay away from fruit juices and soda, drink plenty of water.....but most importantly move! Walk when you can, but if you dont have time...buy some free weights and use them while your watching TV. Moving is the key! Be patient. I have been trying to lose 7 lbs for 2 months now...the last few pounds are the hardest! You may even find you havent lost an ounce and youre pants are looser.....Thats why a recommend taking your measurements for comparision so you dont get frustrated.
