arcticflipper
Is it supposed to be like this? Standing behind the XX, looking at teh pipes I see that the left hand pipe is burning black - 2002 XX FI. I have noticed that in South Africa the right hand pipe always seem to burn hotter than the left. And we do get a bronze colouring on the left pipe, where it meets the headers. Should I worry about this at all? No power loss felt or any smog from the pipe.
brianmacza
unleaded always burns black anyway - no deposits on the pipe to show white/grey
Byrdman
Standing behind the bike: the XX header design leads a majority (Probably 65%) of the spent gas out through the right side muffler. I'm sure that the right side canister would get hotter for this reason. The black residue on the left pipe might be caused by the lower temperatures in that canister? Mikey
Or the mixture could be off on 1 or more of the carbs.

Do you think that follows through all years? Header design is different for carbed and FI years, as you know.

That's where the gasses are split.
arcticflipper
Or the mixture could be off on 1 or more of the carbs. FI unit - 2002 model The right can burns a nice brownish biscuit colour, through the entire pipe. The left side has patches of brown and black through the pipe. When I rub my finger over the black section there is a slight residue come-off onto my finger. Not anything major. No real unleaded car exhaust stories. I have noticed that the sensor monitoring the gasses is located on the right hand side of the exhaust box, is there one on the left? Maybe this is why the right hand side burns hotter? Oh and also the fact that more gas is pushed out through the right....
BarryG
My '02 has Scorpion slip-ons and the the openings are all black. Residue doesn't feel very wet though. I'm not burning any oil either and had a custom dyno done. I guess I'd rather be running a little rich than lean. My XX runs awesome though so I don't worry about it. Pete in PA
I'm carbed and both my pipes discolor at the ends evenly. I don't let them blacken at the tips for long though before I polish the chrome shiny again. Maybe a bit of carbon on an injector? Run a can of Seafoam through 2 tanks and see if it helps. Justin
I have a 4 into 1 setup and it all burns black from the slightly rich jetting I use ... I don't know how the FI is setup on the later models, but if its slightly rich you will get some carbon
arcticflipper
Seafoam??? Whats dat? I've only seen injector cleaner, and is currently running a tank of this mixed with unleaded...
