GriffbsXX
I'm about to change the chain and sprocket on my bird. I've seen where people are going to a 16T/F and 45T/R or staying stock, but I haven't seen much about how that affects mileage. With gas prices in Mid-Cal, I'd like to go with a combo that gives me a better MPG rate. I'm getting about 35 mpg with the stock setup on the bike. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (I did search the board but didn't come up with anything solid on this) Byron
Iceman_40
Your going to get less MPG for sure. I'm not sure how much I'm getting right now but it's not good....
GriffbsXX
So going to a 18T/F would get better mileage?
Iceman_40
Maybe depending how you drove it, I haven't tried. But I will tell you the 16T is nice for power but I think I'm gonna do a sproket change to go back to stock. Not sure if it's the sproket or PC3 by my mileage is way down. I'm guessing around 25MPG but I've been playing a bit more than usual.
Amherst XX
I am running a stock rear sprocket and a 16T front and I get about 33MPG consistantly...but I "play" alot. 8)
GriffbsXX
I've thought about a PC for it but not sure it's worth it with a mostly stock set-up. Only thing changed is 2 bro slip-ons.
Stealth
FWIW; Fuel consumption wont be effected unless you spend extended amounts of time in 6th...
K9XX
I just went back to stock. I was running a 16 counter for about 18 months. I put it on because I wanted more umph. Now that I know how to ride this thing and have done some other mods, I wanted the stock rubberized countershaft back. Honestly, I can't really tell unless I am winding it up in 1st and 2nd, and even then it's not a huge difference any more. IMO.
CALCXX
I tried a 16 tooth and although it does accelerate harder and lift the front wheel easier, I found it harder to ride in the 10 -30 mph twisties. The stock CS sprocket allows damn near 70mph in low gear making tight twisties perfect. Otherwise, (w/16) first is too low and second is too high. Went back to stock. Love the high speed capability with the stock gearing also. If I had more power, I would consider an even taller CS sprocket. Even thought about putting a taller gear on my 954. My .02 cents, Cal
Pete in PA
I think Honda did a good job with the gears and overall gearing. I wont be changing.
seeten1
Will the bird actually pull to the redline in 6th with a 18T front sproket??? I know for a fact it wil with the stock gear. Will the bird pull till the rev limiter in 6th with stock gearing?
demon
Will the bird actually pull to the redline in 6th with a 18T front sproket??? Uuuuhhh, NO. At redline in 6th with an 18 tooth front, you're at the 200 mph mark. You'll need a bit more power to rev it out with an 18 on the front like Northman has done, and it ain't cheap is it Chris? I know it will in a gas station on the centerstand after airing up the tire....
