silverbird1100
I'm going with the 45/46's after months of consideration. Just to be sure, I don't want the "B" tire right? How do I specify to the dealer what I want? I noticed after lots of searching on this site guys either wore them out in 4000 or less or went a good 8000-11,000. Is it possible those low mlilage tires were the "B"? What's the worst anyone saw from their Avon? Thanks.
CBR-RR-XX-CESS
All depends on your riding style more than being a B tire IMO. If you ride aggressive I would suggest the 49 for the front.
demon
Yea, Carlos has had some experience with the "B" tires. Get the regular ones, our bikes can't hold a sustained 186 mph anyway.
Northman
I noticed after lots of searching on this site guys either wore them out in 4000 or less or went a good 8000-11,000. Â Is it possible those low mlilage tires were the "B"? Avon's initial answer was that the first edition were too soft of a compound, and wore out more quickly than the later release versions did. Still not sure if that is the truth or not, as some guys (Pete, for instance) got the same mileage out of their replacement tire. I bought my 46 in June of '03, and got 10K out of it, which is unheard of for me, so I must have had one of the harder compound versions. demon
I've got 3.5K on my rear and 5.5K on my front and they both look like they are halfway worn out. I'm satisfied with both the grip and the wear of these tires.
The Krypt Keeper
I am running a 49 front with a 46 rear. I got I think almost 4.5k miles out of my rear and shes toast. Hey Demon I am going with the 46 again this go around. I got a bike ride in May, that will be like 800 miles in that weekend and don't wanna burn up a 50 on the back from sight seeing  Might try it out in the middle of summer. silverbird1100
Sport touring all the way. If I wanted to replace my tires after 3000 I'd stick with my beloved D220's Do I actually need to ask for the normal tire? It has the designation on the sideway, correct? flyv65
Hmmmm, I can't count the number of Azaro STs (45? 46? The back one) I've worn out in 4,000 miles, give or take...but it's stickier than I've ever run on a Sport-Touring tire, and at least par for wear (*way* better than the Sportec M1). Bryan... I'll buy the Avons again...
Pete in PA
I'm glad to see more stories of Avons only going 4K miles. Must all be in the right hand.
86gn
This is another one of those things that is different for everybody. I get 2k-3k more out of a 46 tire than Speedygeezer does and we ride a lot of the same roads. Two of the best choices of tires for the XX are the Avons and the Pilot Roads. Either of these will give decent mileage with a good amount of grip.
matey_peeps
The diff between the regular and the B model is negligible. My last tire, a non-B, was shot at a little over 6k. My current tire, a B model, looks like it will be shot at a little over 6k. Virtually all my riding is interstate slab.
silverbird1100
I got 4700 out of a D220 abusing it and over 5000 from another conserving it. I won't be wearing an Avon out this quickly will I? 4000? That seems a bit low?
Steve
I consistantly get 6K+ miles on mine, my ass is about 200 lbs and I ride fairly aggressively and often on VERY hot pavement... also vigilant on my pressure though. I'm on my 3 rd set of Avons on this bike, second on my ohter and will stick with them.
silverbird1100
6000 would be just fine. I wiegh 165w/gear and carry 50lbs when I'm concerned about wear. What pressure do the Avon's like with that kind of load?
The Krypt Keeper
I ride aggressive when the roads allow for it. Which is about 70% of my riding I was running 36F and 38R for pressure. This this time around I will bump it up to 38F and 40R might help
silverbird1100
That's pretty cool you can run them that low. Does Avon usually recommend less pressure than other tires, or is the norm 42 just too much? I bet they stick like hell, or is it made up for with the stiffer construction? The Krypt Keeper
I ride some pretty twisty stuff in the mountains, only had the rear skip on me once, and that was from the road conditions. They do get sticky.
silverbird1100
I just talked to a guy at Avon. He said the "B" tire is no different, which is pretty lame of him since so many guys here have gotten better milage from the normal tire, correct? Mithrandir
Just replaced the tyres on my XX - std Avons, not the B model, and got 16K miles. Almost all of that was running up and down the I-5, 1000 miles at a time. A few sweeper-style roads, but mostly droning along.
