mesenger1
The chain on my 99 bird streches to much, also I only get 20,000 miles on them. What do you guys use, do you experience the same problem? I commute 120 miles per day rain or shyne + weekends. What alternatives I have to stock chain? Thanks in advance for your in put. Northman
20K is about right, depending on your riding style, and what kind of maintenance you perform on the chain. I got 25K out of my original chain, but it was toast since before 20 (noisy, kinks, etc.).
Guest rockmeupto125
Most chains don't last much more than 15-20 thousand. After that you are just running on a worn out chain, and gambling that it won't let go on you. With the kind of mileage, and the type of expectations you seem to have from a chain, the only thing I can recommend to you is an automatic oiler. These devices seem to greatly extend chainlife for most users. Do a search on Scottoiler, Hawkoiler, and chain oiler and see what you come up with. There are some experienced users of those products here, hopefully they can chime in.
bhanxx
I did the HawkeOiler w Dual Tip Ejector (ScottOiler flavor). Wouldn't own another chain bike w/o some similar setup. Increases chain life, keeps it clean, chain adjustment rare event and no screwing around spraying something on it. It gets u pretty close to the advantages of low maintenance shaft while retaining all the advantages of chain. Hawk has the advantages of on demand delivery (via button) and can use M1 85W-90 which swung me toward Hawk. Scott has the advantage of automatic delivery with adjustable flow rate. It uses it's own special oil which is similar to auto tran fluid (?), somebody help out. Both are quality products. www.pro-oiler.com is one I just recently ran across that looks likes it has advanges of both Scott and Hawk. NO experience or talked to anyone about it, but looked very interesting. Has pics of XX installation. I would be taking a very hard look at it if i was in market. There are other ones out there, some considerably cheaper.

It took a bit of playing until I got the flow rate correct. 3500 miles on it so far and the chain is lubed and clean. With the correct flow rate the rear wheel actually stays a lot cleaner. ar50racer
Do these actually extend chain life or just reduce maintenance?
Helvet
Do these actually extend chain life or just reduce maintenance? That is the same thing (in this case). If you are a dedicated sprayer like me, you can do over 35.000 miles with the original chain and sprockets. I have a fast riding-style, but I don't do wheelies....... I spray every 300-400 miles, in the wet more often......
