just cant start... battery die on me?

Try to find similar problem in older threads... either I miss it or it just not there. Just re-direct me if somebody know where the solution to my problem... thanks.

Riding 2001 model, 2nd batch FI. Stock bike without any add on esp on electrical side. No recent mods prior to problem. Bike been running as per normal. After stop for 5hrs, unable to start the bike. Sound like the battery was week. After release the starter, clock reset and all LED on (as when turn on the key). Thinking the battery was weak/die, so resort to push start. The bike was able to start then (normal condition, without any abnormal syntoms).

Riding back for 45min rides averaging 90km/hr, with hope to charge back the battery. Before off the engine, try to throttle to check the RR was in good shape. Headlight brighter when throttle more (RR in good codition I believe). Unable to measure the volts and amp as no multimeter around.

With multimeter to check the next day, the battery volts show 12volts, amp from 19A and drop to 15A within 3-4sec. So I believe the battery still in good shape. But still unable to start the engine. Appreciate any help out there...

Tomorrow would be no XX to office, just a slow train. Need to head down much earlier than normal... sigh..

I had the same thing happening with the battery on my '03 Bird. Sometimes it started, sometimes it would be too weak to start, regardless of the amount of miles I put on the day before.

Also had the same thing with the clock reset when attempting to start the bike. Turned out to be the battery used on '01 - '03 bikes have had problems due to increased circuitry (according to the service manager, who also owns a Bird).

I would recommend having the dealer install the battery used in the '97 - '00 models. Just need to have a couple of rubber bumpers pulled out of the bottom of the battery compartment first. It's also half the price.

This was the write-up.

Battery should show about 12.8 volts without engine running.

It looks like your battery is on a last leg.Mine behaved the same.

It was so called maintenance free P.O.S from Walmart.

In post-death examination I poped the battery open, yep cells were dry.WTF, suppose to be MF battery !!!.2 years old.Crap.

As far as the size,on 99 bird bigger YTX 14-BS will fit just fine.

Any idea, does the battery suppose to look 'dry' as it looks the top surface are covered with some white sponge?

Anybody pour the acid before (brand new battery) notice the level of the acid inside the battery? Does the acid obviously seen from the hole?

at the mean time I'm charging the battery using low amp to recover the battery, to prevent surface charging and its more on knowledge purpose. Still able to run 1 day without problem. Monitoring the volts before and after each rides to see the drops of voltage. Getting a new battery soon for safety reason as I dont want to squat by the road side....

Thanks guys for all the info....
