  1. oh damn. Too bad my new kid is sucking up all my discretionary money. Would love to take this off your hands to be my new commuter.
  2. Got a call from a friend who saw me riding home last night. I was in the HOV lane and making decent time (85-95mph). He was stuck in bumper to bumper stop-and-go traffic. He said he heard me coming, watched me zip past and then heard me going. For a long time. Said the bird sounded good. He's right. Does sound good. Once I got off the HOV and into stop and go for the last stretch to home, I overheated. Pegged the needle above H. Smelled the coolant and saw the vapor. Pulled into a gas station to fill up and let the bike cool off for a while. WTF? In december I should not be overheating. Ok, yes, it was 68F but still, it s the principal of the thing--overheating during Christmas season? crap. I'm used to the bird running hot during the summer commute but this was something else. Puts the exhaust situation on the back burner.
  3. Yeah, I guess you're right. I remember my first year at TeXXt, Hardy made a comment about how he didn't like being behind me. I thought its was my ugly lines and comical way of riding that maybe un-nervered him. Nope, it was the D&D. I guess it ain't so bad when I'm cruising and the rpms are in the sub 5k range but twist it up a little bit people start looking. I guess I really should look at another muffler if I want to cut the volumn. I would really like to save some bucks and get something that will bolt right on to the existing mid-pipe. What do I need to know about buying a used muffler? Thanks everybody for the input. Even you, Dave.
  4. Yeah but was the the muffler quiter after that?
  5. So we went from easy peasy to god luck that shit don't work in 7 posts. Neverminding Dave's thinnly veiled pleas for validation of his ..uh...craving. My concerns now lay with ...will repacking lower the decibels? Will repacking be as easy as some say or will I end up getting so angry that the carbon sleeve is damaged and the bent/stuck/wasted internals get tossed out of the garage and into the trash can? Mostly I'm worried that I'll spend the time and money to repack only to be disappointed by the the noise level. When I bought the bike 20,000 miles ago the muffler didn't seem too loud. Over time I have noticed the increase. I assumed this was due to the packing burning out or otherwise degrading. Could it be anything else? The tone has always been good and hasn't changed, just the volume.
  6. Thanks guys. Sounds like a good Saturday rainy morning project.
  7. I have a D&D exhaust that has become too loud even for me. Needs a repack. D&D has quoted me a $58 repack kit that includes packing, rivets and SS bands. How difficult is it to repack a can? I do not a have a riveting tool or any experience with one. I'm not afraid to try something but want to make sure that I can at least expect a decent outcome befiore investing in a kit and the tools to use it. Whats the word on repacking?
  8. Cudgel, Xr600 with cb450 engine? Sounds interesting. Tell us more.
  9. After speaking with several contractors and getting thoroghly confused and irritated, I finally found a guy that walked me through the whole thought process and then took me to a house he had just done with almost the exact same floor. We are going wih the glue down option. IT is a little bit more than floating the floor but think it will be the better long term option. Definitely better in the work out room. The crew is supposed to be here the Monday after Thanksgivinhg and will take two days to do three rooms (557 sq feet). Wife and I have a bet on when they will really be done. I have Friday, she it taking Wednesday. We'll see.
  10. Well it isn't nail down or glue down. IT is a floating floor, tongue-n-groove type floor. One of the contractors that has given a bid to install said about the same thing...just moisture barrier. Probably be the way we go.
  11. I got a hell of a deal on some USFLOORS BAMBOO flooring at Lowes a couple of months ago. A pricing mistake on thier part led to me being able to get 1400 sq ft bamboo at about $0.40 per sq ft. I had about 500 sq ft installed already in a rent house. The guys that did the install did OK. But only ok. I'm not unhappy with the install for a rent house. Now I want to have a couple of rooms in my house installed. I'll definetly go with a different contractor and pay a bit more to make sure the install is all I want it to be. One of the rooms we're reflooring is the work out room. 12'x16'. I'm curious if any of you guys are aware of a special underlayment that is designed for athletic floors that can be used under this tongue-groove floating bamboo. When ever I've talked to freinds and family about flooring the work out room several have refferrred to a special underlayment but nobody knows for sure what it is or does specifically. I figure the weights area will have to have the rubber flooring mats on top of the bamboo. But I am concerned about the area where I might, possibly, conceiveably, perhaps, maybe some day in the possible future do a P90X type work out. I want to make sure the floor has some give as my flabby out of shape self jumps up and down on it.
  12. Oh damn, Eric. This is good news. Should I rush right over to ebay and start loking for the R1 shock right now before all the other xx owners push the price up? Did I say that out loud? Very much looking forward to what you have come up with explained in simple terms that a simple man such as I can understand.
  13. I figured you had aired down for traction on the dirt road at Ozarxx.
  14. oh damn. That is a great looking bike. Should have no problem selling that one.
  15. I bought that Interceptor when I was in college in Abilene, Tx in 1988. It was owned by a B-1 pilot stationed at Dyess AFB. When I bought it , he showed me his log book that listed everytime he rode it with date location miles ridden, temperature, etc. To say it was a well documented bike would be a gross understatement. I had every intention of keeping it up but by the second week....not so much. It was a great bike and I regret selling it. I don't think I have ever seen abnother with full fairing and Honda RWB paint like that.
  16. I love it. Good times.....
  17. They didn't offer a larger gear position indicator? Sounds great. Micron, huh? I need to look into that as I am tired of the racket from my D&D.
  18. I have a Olympia Stealth in pewter, hi viz yellow size small. I bought it for wife Anna but she has never worn it. Still has the tags on it. I'll let it go for a friend of a friend for half price, $150.00 http://www.olympiamotosports.com/stealth/stealth.htm
  19. Sale is in process. These went quick. Hopefully the new owner gets much more use than I. The bags deserve it.
  20. I bought these Hondaline Textile saddlebags from somebody online here three or four years ago. I've never used them. Seems selfish, doesn't it? I mean surely somebody cold be using these. I've used them mostly for occupying shelf space in the garage. Occaisionally I get them out and put them on the bike but they never seem to make the final packing arrangement. I can't explain it... they are in great shape, seal well, mount easily, I have the plastic paint guard sheets to protect the rear cowl, yet either the givi e46 wins or my black duffle gets strapped on the rear of the seat or both. But never the saddlebags. and I don't have any real reason why. The time for the saddles bags to go has come. They need to be out there, carrying somebody's crap around. $50.00 plus shipping from 77017.
  21. So I guess that means the ohlins shock off the DUcati 999S is out, huh? I've queried Penske about the 8900E series as well as a 8983 remote. We'll see what they say.
  22. Damn Redbird, last time I took a chance on dreaming about a rear shock you pissed all over my parade. That time it was gettng the stock shock rebuilt. Now I can't pick a right after market shock.... I'd be annoyed if I didn't think this is the kind of advice I come here for. I assume (watch out!) there are other models of bikes that have a direct bolt on shock that can replace the stock CBR1100XX shock. CBR900 is one right? Are there others? If I don't hurry up and get moving I'll miss my happy collision of money, opportunity and get-it-done-before-OzarXX timeframe so any nifty shortcuts to list of bikes that would be good candidate for a shock donor? Right mounts, length, decent adjustability? Since I'm looking for aftermarket used shocks, I'm figuring there will be a rebuild/respring required as well. At the same time I'm going to get the forks done with new springs, new oil. Stainless brake lines, too. And it all needs to happy fast before I lose my nerve and do something stupid like put the money in the savings account.
  23. My wonderful motorcycle just clicked over 30K miles. Not much for 99, I know but......still a milestone that says..time to address the suspension and brakes. Goofing around on ebay I came across this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Penske-8983...=item4aaa6fba70 I know there was a group buy in the past for Penske 8987 and 8983 shocks. I figure this might be worthwhile to go after assuming that A) I get it at a fair price that allows me to get it rebuilt and resprung without breaking the bank or being more than 60% of a new comparable shock and it will bolt on to the bird. I'll work on getting a rebuild and respring price but can I get some help on the "will it bolt on to a 99 bird" question?
