That's sage advice from Joe. You can certainly replace the chain and front sprocket yourself EASILY. I have 10 extremely fat fingers and am about as mechanically inclined as a bowling ball, yet I can do most maintenance myself. Do a good search here in the Garage, print out the advice you read, TAKE YOUR TIME, and save lots of money for gas and NeXXT and other XX riding endeavours.

And DON'T pay attention to the Wing boards. There are a lot of stupid old curmudgeons who don't know shit on them. There is a far more knowledgeable group here, bar none. Something Wing specific like "which wire to do this" and "where do I mount this"? Sure. Other than that, no way. They are largely retired folks who remember the way it was 'back in the day'. I'd do the Honda or Mobile 1 all the way. No need to stay with the dino-oils.

Agree with the above Dave. And I will add that with the Wing, the difference in the cluch feel between cheap oil and good oil is HUGE. Much more of a difference that any other bike I have ever owned. I know you're not a cheap SoB, but the Wing needs quality oil.

Really, on a DID? No way o the ZVM or ZVM2. 'Might as well use a Zip Tie! A lot of guys are ok with them on lighter bikes, but why trust something that isn't as strong on something that is important as the chain. If a chain fails, your FUCKED!

Same story Dave. Their free shipping used FedEx GROUND, and not the real Fed Ex guys. FedEx Ground is the old RPS, which SUCKED monkey ball sweat. The guys who do the deliveries aren't even FedEx or RPS employees, they are independant contractors who drive Fed Ex Ground trucks. Like Dave, 3 days from Tucson to Richmond (2250 miles), then another 6 days to deliver the tires the last 25 miles to my house. But kudos to Blaine (the swmototire guy), he jumped on FedEx to get my Pirelli's to me. I'll definately buy from him again.

I am not positive, but I believe that is their older 'O' Ring chain. If so, it is probably OK, but you won't get a lot of wear out of it. I'd guess half the life of their newer ZVM2 chains. I believe their sight is didchain.com. Try there.

I'm reading that a lot of guys are doing that with the 954s and 929s, but then again, those bikes are a sold 125lbs lighter than the Bird. A few guys asked me about it as I'm replacing nearly everyhting on the 954. For me, a bigger, stronger chain is more important than saving a little weight. And I'm not good enough to appreciate any difference thay may result. If I'm after quicker launches, I'd rather just change out the sproclets, like go -1/+1.

Actually, they are recommending the ZVM2 for the Bird. Stronger than the ZVM. Like Dave said, ride smart and keep a strong eye out for it. And that's why I always order myself, double-check the order when it gets in, and do as much maintenance myself. Good luck.

Always listen to Dale. It does have a Gold cap, but several of their weights now have a gold cap. Look for the GOLD cap, with the 15w-50 in white letters in a RED text box. Lots of very knowledgeable bike riders swear by this stuff.

Different Pad, Different Size. OEM are actually good pads. Mr. Honda selects good pads on nearly all his bikes. OEM and EBC are my favorites. Galfer is OK, except for Galfer Green - I think they suck.

$20? Or $120. I have the $120ish chain tool from Motion Pro and it works fine. I think Speed99 bought the heavy duty one and he likes it a lot. Mine works great, no problems. All I do is Dremmel off the head before I push through the link. It makes the job a lot easier. Then again, I'd probably do that if I had the really-super heavy duty one.

The only thing I've had success with, that hasn't already been mentioned above, is WD40.

It's about the easiest thing you can do to the Bird. Do a search of this section. Lots of different techniques, but the one that I have found that works the best (by far and without any question) is the one that sonuds the craziest. Don't bother with the Grip Glue. Use cheap, aerosol hairspray. Really. Spray on the bar to get it a little wet. Spray a little inside the the grip to wetten it. Quickly, while it is all a little wet, just slide on the new grip. Easy. Let it dry and bam, you're done. One of the grip manufacturers (I think it was Johar) actually recommends this method over using grip glue. Try it, you'll be amazed how easy it is and how secure the grip is.

Jim (XXti) was selling his Rentec the other day and I moved too slowly on it because when he mentioned that he was going to Ventura, I went to their site and knew right away that was the right combination for me. Now to find someone who will discount it for me!

Yeh, what he said! I asked the local wrench at the crappy stealership and he says you never have to change the fork oil and that he's never heard of it biong done. That was confidence inspiring!
