  1. That's not bad at all. I just disassembled several Honda (Showa) rear shocks and they use top-notch internals. The only thing that "feels" cheap is the steel body but I'm sure that's just an impression. I would imagine that a steel body is better than an aluminium one. Yeah Jaws in the UK reckons the std shock is mechanically quite good, only drawback is it gas over oil, he gets them rebuilt with oil over oil I believe, not sure exactly how that is done but apparently they last much longer before losing damping quality
  2. You're not the only "special" ones Our Oz switches are permanently on as well
  3. Jaws also can get the stock XX shock rebuilt and upgraded to oil over oil (which I believe is better :icon_think: ), might be a bit expensive with shipping though
  4. Finally got mine fitted a couple of months ago but haven't had a chance to get the missus on the back as she finds riding in 30c+ temps too hot :icon_think: I finally got a set from a Havoc Cycles on eBay for ~$83AUD shipped, fitted them the next day They did mount up straight away BUT they didn't sit perfectly flat, they stayed up slightly on an angle so I needed to file some off the end of the peg where is butts against the inside of the mount and also needed to elongate the detent hole in the plate on the locking mechanism so that they would sit flat (about 3/4 hrs work) :icon_think: Will be interested to see Toynuts peg extenders 1 & 2 are pre filing, 3 is after filing, 4 & 5 are folded up and 6 is down from the side
  5. Seems a little high I get ~30mpg riding hard most of the time on my 98 carbed XX, was getting ~35mpg when I first got it :icon_think: That is speedo corrected though for the current mileage and I have gone 2 up on the rear cog so it uses a bit more fuel at highway speeds

I tried the Shinko 005's but while they were OK, they weren't a patch on the PPf/PR2r combo The rear only lasted ~6500km whereas the old PR would wear out the centre in 10 000km and the PR2's wear out the sides in 10k :icon_think: The front did lat ~14 000km but was never as confidence inspiring as the PP front or the current PR2 front Also the ~$70 a set saving over the Michi's just wasn't worth it :icon_wall: Yeah my 98 had a 205 on it when I got it but I doubt it was original at 32 000km It was a shit tyre anyway and going to a PP was an amazing difference I have been running a PR2 front for the last ~16 000km (PP's were usually 12-13 000km) and it has been quite good but the bike doesn't turn as quick as with the PP so I may go back to a PP :icon_think: Did look at trying the Conti's last time but they were ~$80 a set more than the Michi's when I looked here in West Aus and the local dist didn't have the BB rated ones :icon_duh:
  7. Also have a look at some of R1000's threads on the work he did :icon_think:
  8. I had a similar problem as far as 1st and 2nd, in a lot of corners I felt dropping to 1st was too much and 2nd was a bit sluggish so I went UP 2 teeth on the rear and it made a huge difference. Now I can leave it in 2nd and it pulls nicely out of the corners and makes it easier to lift the front as well The larger rear solves the wear issues on the chain :icon_think: The 2 up on the rear did throw out the speedo though so I got a speedo healer, also my fuel usage has gone up as well (partly because of the slightly higher revs and partly because the Odo is ticking over faster )
  9. The replacement LED's for '97'/'98' are 6 each #74 and 4 each #194. The way it looks is the smaller #74's are for the idiot lights and the larger #194's are for the tach/speedo illumination. Ill let everyone know for sure after the LED's come in. Yeah there are 4 large T10 wedge type bulbs that are used to illuminate the dials (fuel/temp/speedo & tacho) then there are 6 T5's for the 2 indicators, HB/SS/oil pressure and neutral The T10's also help illuminate the clock And yes they are all in sockets that rotate 90 deg and have polarity so the globes will work one way only :icon_think: FYI I think some of the Digi dash do use LED's for some parts of the dash (the LCD displays I think) :icon_think:
  10. I'm not sure the reason for the speedo not being illuminated is those plugs I just replaced the 4 x T10 globes on my 98 dash with LED's because I couldn't see the speedo at night and the fuel gauge illumination was intermittent I reckon the intermittent was from a dodgy globe I replaced the 2 middle globes with blue LED's and the outer ones with clear (blue was making the red in the red zone almost black) and the whole dash has a soft blue light to it now without being overly bright
  11. Am very interested in how this turns out considering a HEL kit is $720 AUD + shipping just for the brake lines
  12. Yeah I bought one last year when I did my new chain/sprockets and busted a pin trying to pop out the link pin (even after I ground the head off ), luckily I ordered a spare when I got it It worked OK other than that

    grips

WTF are they made from Platinum or something :icon_wall:
  14. Not sure about Euro Birds but my Aussie 98 has a clear bottom to the taillight for the plate Always wondered why your US bikes had those ugly big plate lights
  15. The 97-98 were carbed and not FI
  16. Yeah that was all I really wanted/thought myself was your feelings on the clearance as from looking at your pics and pics of my bike they look like they might have clearance issues These ones of Toynut sound promising Are they a readily available lowering bracket Toynut or are they hard to get hold of? They sound similar to the MC Larry ones in the pics in as far as his move the legs out as well as down and forward
  17. Thanks mate Those pics are awesome and help enormously, the missus will love it Looks like now I just have to locate some second hand pegs Just one other thing if I may ask? In your opinion would they foul on the exhausts if mounted on these blocks? :icon_think: , I realize it is a bit of a guess but I am thinking they WILL foul the exhausts
  18. I never used mine anyway and it is useless now with the HID's in HB
  19. Will do some pics if I can get it sussed out and find some pegs at a wrecker/eBay etc (the next challenge as I don't really want to try new at ~$300 ) Not even that fussed if the peg doesn't fold, as I could just use a cotter pin instead of a split pin and just swap them over when the missus is on for a long ride :icon_think: May also look into the MC Larry passenger lowering blocks if I can find the pegs and determine whether they will work
  20. "Camping" Eh Sounds like fun Mate if you could try that and tell me how the ST peg switches across and looks on the XX that would be great From doing a bit of web surfing on various sites I found THIS which seems to indicate that at lest the actual mounts dimension is the same BUT it is also the angle of the peg once on that will be a factor as the Kuryakyn pegs are adjustable :icon_think: No use having the pegs in the mounts if they are at a 45 deg angle I don't mind if I need to tickle the pegs a little to get them to fit the mounts to fold etc like I did with Dave's lowering blocks but they need to be close to level Oh and whenever you can get to it is fine, it's something I have been meaning to do for a while but as our spring has just started the good riding weather (well for pillioning anyway) is coming
  21. Yeah I did think of trying the XX pegs but the size isn't that much different although it does have the rubber, the ST pegs are much larger area and have thicker/softer rubber from looking and as there was a few on here with ST's and XX's I thought it may be something someone could suss out for me :icon_think: Certainly wouldn't be buying them new though, the dealer quoted me ~$300AUD for the ST pegs (+ rubbers/pins etc not mounts) :icon_duh: Not too worried about them folding back up either as I usually don't bother putting them up if they are down As far as being whipped, if I want her to shut up I just pop the front wheel up a few times and she stops talking to me :icon_clap:
  22. As in the heading I am wondering whether there are any of you guys that have had/still have an XX and an ST1300 I have been tossing about the possibility of swapping the pillion pegs out on my 98 XX for something more comfortable for my missus as she always complains of the small peg digging into her arch :icon_think: I had hoped that Dave's lowering blocks would work but unfortunately not I have also looked at the Buell peg mod and was out today at the local Honda dealership and there was an XX and an 09 ST1300 sitting side by side. So I was looking at the ST and noticed that the ST has a much wider/slightly longer and rubber covered pillion peg and the angle and size of the mounting looked very similar so what I was wondering was whether they may interchange? :icon_think: So I was wondering whether anyone on here that has an ST has ever tried to swap the pillion pegs to an XX or if someone actually HAS both would there be any chance of measuring or even trying to swap them over? I did ask the guy at the shop but he wasn't going to let me start swapping pegs, especially on a new ST, didn't even really want me to measure them :icon_snooty: He did look through a book for aftermarket parts and found some stuff designed for the Honda Cruisers like the VTX that may have fitted up but they worked out at around $500AUD They were also more like boards which while it might have been great for the missus's feet wouldn't have been practical NOT to mention fuckin ugly :icon_duh: EDIT: Like these for the VTX
