  1. I bought the bagster bag and cover ($250) right after I got my Bird. I leave it on year round. 2 years, 27000 miles later and many of gas fill-ups, grocery hauling, touri9ng, opening for my CD player etc it is still in very good condition. I've had two zipper pulls break off but they are easily replaced. One I replaced with a nifty little Coleman thermoneter/compass thing. I will say that the bag ain't water resistant worth a shit. I found out the hard way. I use one of the side pockets to keep the rain cover handy. Barely fits in there but it will fit.
  2. I gotta 99 model that I bought with 3700 miles on it almost exactly 2 years ago. It now has 29000+ miles on it. It needs a CCT. Anyway, the last couple of times I have ridden the bike and got it "hot"...heat gauge showing the needle up there on them wiggly lines (not outta the range brackets or in the red) and ridden it at that temperature for a while, well, it starts making this dull knocking sound. And, on tour in the Mississippi Delta last week not only did it make this dull knocking noise but it also started making this high pitched whine. (Like maybe from the fan (?). I hear these noises at idle. Bike runs fine. Noises go away when bike is idling at lower temps. Anybody else experience this? Got any idea what it is?
  3. On tour I use a dry bag with a $35 pair of JC Whitney saddle bags thrown over the bag. And my Bagster tank bag. The system works pretty good for keeping stuff dry and allowing me access to stuff I need while riding. But, I strap that stuff on my passenger seat and it lays over the grab rail on the back. Anybody know of a nice small flat luggage rack, maybe similar to what you see on the BMW's that'll bolt on the XX. I've looked at the tubular rack's over at JAWS but I don't care for that rack at all.
  4. Bagster is what I decided on. Full cover and tank bag. I leave the bag on the bike year-round. 20+ k miles and still in good shape (coupla zipper pulls been replaced but that's it)
  5. I did thousands of miles in the rain on my OEM pads. Recently put on a set of the EBC's and was riding in the rain Tuesday, real down pour, and didn't notice any difference. That said, them XX brakes are some serious brakes. I never rode anything with brakes that strong. About threw myself over the bars when I first got the bike. I got another bike and after riding the XX I gotta adjust to the longer stopping distance. I treat them with respect in rain or shine. But especially in rain.
  6. So, I gotta stock and a Cheetah and a Givi and in the process of changing I have lost (they fell into the bike) whatever the two middle screws (right and left) anchor to and even if I had the nuts or whatever the pieces are I have no fcuking idea how to place them so they will remain in place while I fit the shield and start the screws. So, any info on what to use (other than ordering the OEM) and more importantly, how would I put the "nut" in place, fit the shield and start the screws?
  7. FYI, I am looking around in a local O'Reilley's Auto parts and see this rack of auto fasteners. Anyway, I installed two "Dorman" (Part No. 799-100) 5/16 Nylon Rivets on my fairing in the two holes on the bottom of the right and left side fairing panels. The two in front that hold the panels together on the very bottom. They seem to work fine. They require a phillips to unscrew them but they install by pressing. I found that the fastener was so stiff that I needed to Press the head into the expanding portion and then unscrew it before actually slipping into the fairing holes and pressing to set. The parts guy said these fasteners are very common.

    Chain Oilers

I got a Hawke and I like it. I like the manual control that allows me to chose (low speed, heading into the gas pump or whatever other stop I might be making) when I oil the chain. I manually lube the chain too. Replaced the OEM chain this winter at ~23,000 miles and there was chain life/adjustment left.
  10. Mine is Bagster and it's great (but pricey - $250) I dunno if you can get just the cover (or would want it). Cover has spring clips in the back and plastic "things" in the front for the bag...These allow for flipping bag up for fueling and quick removal. You should be aware that Bagster is made in France
  11. Thanks. I carry a tire repair kit, fuses, duct tape, a few odds and ends of tools plus tool kit that came with bike. Maybe I'll get a spare voltage regulator along with the clutch cable when I get a chance
  12. 18 months and 22,000 miles since I got the XX. So, this year I got several multiple thousand mile trips planned and the bike has over 25,000 miles on it. (It had about 3500 when I got it). Anyway, do I need to be carrying a spare clutch cable or something? Do I need to replace a water pump as PM? Comments ?
  13. If it's black and in good condition I am very interested in the lower right fairing. Maybe some other stuff.
  14. The temp gauge on the 99 has a "range" (marked on the gauge) that is acceptable. My 99 runs close to the bottom of that marked range on the highway and close to the top of that range in traffic.
  15. I bought this bike used last year. A 1999 model and have considered replacing the battery simply due to age. Then I started wondering if the previous owner had replaced the battery?? I lost his phone number or I'd call him.
  16. You got the seat off, just slide the clips forward under the lip at the bottom of the tank til they are straight and tighten.
  17. To late, I already ordered it. Will let you know how it turns out. Thanks marquis. Anybody got a good link for a set of them Hyper pro (?) front springs?
  18. 22,000 miles and I needs a new chain. I guess I will replace the sprockets also. So, where do you guys shop for a chain and sprocket(s)? Preferably a set. I don't want/need any of that high dollar stuff. I tried that PartMonster guy and get no response to my emails and couldn't find the stuff on his website, a shame cause I got a pretty good deal on brake pads from him.
  19. I hate admitting this but I dropped my XX going around a gate, from dirt up onto an kinda elevated gravle roadway. Anyway the gravel was that sharp edged limestone and it gouged the shit outta the right lower panel. So, I take it off and play with it and see I'm just fucking it up some more and I take it down to this paint shop (Econo) and talk to the guy - anyway he says the color is "GM Black" and he'll fix it and paint it and he does and it looks pretty good (I had him work around the logo). Color is, to my eye, a perfect match.
  20. The lug nut wrench on a 1997 Saturn will fit over the handle of the tool kit wrench and provide enough extension for ample leverage.
  21. Recently ran from Memphis to Phoenix (1500 miles) mainly keeping it over 80 and under 100 mph. 38-39 MPG
  22. Thanks for pointing out the obivious - I need that on occasion. And thanx for the info about locktite/bodywork.
  23. Anyway, one of the smaller bolts 9smaller diameter head) holding the bodywork on fell off somewhere and also one of capscrews that attach the windshield Where can I get replacements?
  24. It's a fucking "quick-link" - use your imagination. You know, bungee stud with chain link on it.
