Mikey
And don't completely ignore the HID ballast, you haven't tested with that warmed up yet.
rockmeupto125
A lot of people with HID's hold the starter button down as they turn the key on, holding current to the lights until the starter button is released. Ideally, they'd be switched and not connected to your stock headlight wiring, but as great as our worlds are, they are often less than ideal.
slowrideCX
I do hold the button down when I turn the key so that the bike is running before they try to fire. I will see what I can do with switching them. If there was an issue with the balast though it should pop the fuse for the headlights if it over amps at any point though. IIRCC it is a 10amp fuse. Once the bike is done I am going for a test ride locally to see if it shows its ugly face again. Maybe if I change the blinker fluid that might fix it... I think it is still original. The Krypt Keeper
never heard of starting that way with the HID's normally turn the key on (HID's fire up), flick the kill switch to on, wait for FI system and gauge cluster to cycle and hit the starter button. IcePrick
I used to hold the button down and turn the key to keep the HIDs from doing a hot restrike. Then the phone mount went on the middle of the tree and mostly obstructed the key - plus I got lazy. Haven't roasted an igniter yet, but I still have a halogen in my high beam that I could swap out if I burn up the HID low beam.
The Krypt Keeper
would starting the bike while holding the button risk screwing up something else up? just wondering if a sudden hit to the system of the fuel pump coming on/priming, gauges cycling, flux capacitor fluxing and the starter engaging might throw something off or pop a fuse, all because I was worried about my HID's I really do like the switch idea Joe mentioned, that way everything is running and you can switch on the HID's
slowrideCX
Not sure how it would effect the FI bikes. I am old school. In 09 I road home from WV with a toasted stator by pulling all fuses that i didn't need. Made it 350 miles on just the battery. 😆 Edited June 9, 2015 by slowrideCX
rockmeupto125
HID's pull 12-15 amps when starting. That's a far cry from the minimal demand of your electrics and pump.
The Krypt Keeper
Great, now I have to try it and learn how to start my bike again or be worried about smoking my ballasts every time
HANKSXXX
As I remember it, with a lampcord from the reg/rec to the battery on my bike, your stator had 1 leg not charging while the other 2 provided just over 12 volts at 5000 rpm's. Damn, that was a fast ride home...LOL

Damn, that was a fast ride home...LOL Ya know for an old fuck you have 1 hellova good memory. .. 😀 😁 Yes you are correct. It would put out just over 13volts from time to time for short periods which I guess was enough to keep me going. Yes that was the ride where we used my bike to troubleshoot your bike and fixed yours and then mine crapped out...lol 😀 Speaking of fast rides when the hell are you and I going for a ride? You owe me a trip...
Mikey
As for the button press thingy. it's not a full press on the starter, it's just enough to disengage the headlight. So I press the button about half way, turn the key (no headlight), continue the starter press until the bike starts, then release the starter button the rest of the way. The Krypt Keeper
will have to try it and see how it works, get a feel for it. Thanks
HANKSXXX
yeah, and you have a shitty one for a young punk... Anytime, but lets try not to collect any more tickets. So I was riding along in front, minding my own business when you pissed off Trooper Littledick and he stopped me too...Good thing the judge was from my generation...lol Edited June 10, 2015 by HANKSXXX
slowrideCX
yeah, and you have a shitty one for a young punk... Anytime, but lets try not to collect any more tickets. So I was riding along in front, minding my own business when you pissed off Trooper Littledick and he stopped me too... Good thing the judge was from my generation...lol Hahahahaha 😀😁😂😃 Trooper Littledick... Yes I admit my memory is not so good. I blame it on the blows to the skull I took as a teen while racing motocross. 😀 or many other things I did as a kid...lol That day we had a great time till Littledick said he was chasing us for miles... yeah as if... loved the Judge and prosecutor though.. they were great. After this weekend my schedule slows down a bit so we will have to plan something. Ok back to the gremlins. Well never did find the smoking gun but went over every wire, connector and switch I could find. I found some corrosion on a few nothing bad. Cleaned coatwd with D E G and tested the battery. The battery is rated at 200cca so I tested it at work with our load tester that the mechanic has and @ 200amp load for 15 seconds the voltage never dropped below 11 volts so the battery passed the test. I even pushed the limits a smidgen and went to 300amps for about 3-5 seconds and the voltage only dropped to about 10.4 still a passing grade. I love Yuasa Batteries... After putting the battery back in and finishing all checks the bike fires right up and runs perfectly. I put the charging system under full load with all lights 4ways on baord air compressor and fan running. Still charged at 14.1 volts for the 5 mins I tested it. Thank god the R1 RR has fins cause it gets warm. 😀 I am leaning towards a bad ground as the cause of my problem. My reasoning is that everything that could put that much load on the charging system has a fuse and if it was to draw enough amps to shut the bike down it would pop the fuse first. So after I put all the pieces back on the bike and do an oil change and coolant flush I am taking it for a shakedown run. 1 thing I did while I had it apart was to change out my dash lights with LED bulbs and it looks good. Thanks for all the help. Keep your fingers crossed that my baby is well again... 😀 I'll let ya know how it works out.
Mikey
OMG we aren't going to get closure! Except me actually. If it doesn't come back, then my "take it all apart, clean and lube" was the winner! Yippie! What do I get?

The Krypt Keeper
Good deal. sounds like it was time to just go over all connections and give some cleaning and love. What led bulbs did you use in dash lights?
slowrideCX
Good deal. sounds like it was time to just go over all connections and give some cleaning and love. What led bulbs did you use in dash lights? They are a direct replacement for the factory bulbs. They look great. I don't remember the info I can look when I get home. They came from ebay and cost me $4 for 8 of them with shipping.. 😀 I took the bike for a test ride after changing the oil yesterday all though it was only a few miles it ran perfect and the charging system was rock solid. Hope it was just time for some TLC. I am hoping to get some more miles on her before Sunday. Dave if we can sneak away early enough from the ACS endpoint on Sat we may try to scoot out to meet up with you guys for a little bit. No promises though. Message me your phone number so I can get a hold of you to hook up.
The Krypt Keeper
Sweet thanks, I have wanted to change all my lights to LED. The last ones to do will be the dash ones. Still need to put new relay in for my turn signals. Its sitting on my work bench but haven't gotten to it. oh well let them blink fast for a while. Glad you got all the gremlins sorted out.. Mikey
Oh sure, he'll get the info for you. For me, he just says "got them from ebay". Sheesh.
The Krypt Keeper
I do feel special, as I will wait for my info and see if its a T10 wedge bulb or a 194 wedge bulb that I need. Looked on Amazon and found 40 of the T10's for $
slowrideCX
Oh sure, he'll get the info for you. For me, he just says "got them from ebay". Sheesh. Hey you I told you what I spent on them and that I got them from ebay get it strait... 😀 😄 😜 I honestly don't remember the link. I was on the XX Facebook page and someone posted the link. Not sure if my ebay history will go back that far. I'll have to look. Dave if I put anything on my work bench I may very well loose it in the mess. I need to spend some quality time in my shop.. 😉
The Krypt Keeper
XX has a facebook link? hmmmm I go through spells and here lately my work bench was so cluttered I had another table next to it do work on crap because I was too lazy to organize the workbench. Got another toolbox for my birthday that is 11 drawers so I actually took time to organize my tools and clean the bench off. Had a full washing machine load of terry cloth towels and shop rags, and probably 20 I threw away to avoid putting anything icky in the washing machine.
