The Krypt Keeper
I don't know shit about electrical stuff. Smart enough to know that you don't play with it, hair still standing from that car key in the light socket when I was 5yrs old. working on a project bike and please bare with me. Most people talking electrial sound like Greek to me. Got my lights on the bike (finally, had to make a bracket) started the bike and the dash kept flashing back and forth from running to the 188 mph flash it does on startup. Doesn't do this with the lights unplugged. don't have a handy dandy digital meter got a basic little needle guage one but here is what I checked. Can go buy a digital if it will help me. Bike not running I have 12.5 volts across the battery. with lights on and bike not running I got the same reading at 12.5 (forgot to check with the bike running) pulled the tank and took off the regulator. put my meter into ohms checked across the 3 yellow wires onto the 2 red and 2 black on the other plug. all 3 yellow showed nothing on both red wires. all 3 yellow showed (if I got this right) 1.5 when doing each black wire on the regulator. checked the stator's 3 wires at the plug, again in ohms and bike not running or anything plugs. used the negative post on the battery and when I touched each wire it pegged my needle on the meter in the far right corner past 0. hope some of this helps to tell me if its the regulator or stator. The regular is a kokusan denki and its not a mosfet regular. So was looking into upgrading that anyones as they seem to fail a lot and the Mosfets last longer, run cooler and are just an all around better part. Tempted to just yank of my stator cover to see if any of the windings are cooked but will wait for your help first. thanks for any info or help. John01XX
Someone way smarter than I will chime in shortly I am sure but until then why are you thinking the regulator or stator are bad if there is no problem when the lights are unplugged? If the problem only occurs with the lights are plugged in then I would figure the problem is somewhere with the wiring of the lights. Are we talking about auxiliary lights on the Bird? By the way an analog meter is just fine for said troubleshooting.
The Krypt Keeper
This is a set of dominantor headlights on a triumph project. After a beer or two I yanked stator cover to take a peek. 8 or 10 bolts and pops off. Stator is smoked. 4 coils all nice and crunchy.
