oldbird
My 2002 Bird, 75,000 miles, full Akra system, PC lll, and no other engine mods, has not been started since mid Decemner. It stays on a battery tender, has a 2 year old battery, yet when I bumped the starter the smell of raw fuel was immediately very heavy. I let it spin for 5-6 second and then a rather large backfire happened. So before I begin pulling plugs, checking fuses, etc, does anyone have any free and accurate advice for me ? I dare not continue trying to start it for fear of damaging the old girl. Thanks. Gene
Redbird
Check the fuel pressure regulator. They're becoming common failure items as the model ages and a leaky one could easily explain your symptoms.
rockmeupto125
This is where I would look first. I'm increasingly suspicious of the damned corn squeezings in our gasoline in regards to such matters.

Easiest check is to pull the vacuum line of the pressure regulator if there is gas in the line its toast
cbrxxquad
dont run till you check the oil! If it is over full, it will be gas in there too. Smell it. change it after you fix it, of before. Hell you get the idea
oldbird
Thanks for the quick advice everyone. It appears the FPR is the problem and I should have the new OEM part Monday. Oil seems fine but I will change it nevertheless. Cheers !
The Krypt Keeper
good idea on the oil change, very cheap insurance. Watched my brother in law detonate his pulling tractor motor in mid pull wide the fuck open and instant paperweight that rattles with broken pieces inside. oldbird
It lives ! Thanks again guys. I ended up changing the soaked plugs, smelly oil, along with the FPR.
