jambie Posted August 2, 2006 Share Posted August 2, 2006 I did a couple searches before I got here, but no one really mentioned using the supplied bracket w/ suction cups on the inside of the windscreen ( I have a GIVI ) to mount their radar detector. I got a new Escort 8500 today, and mounted it in this way, letting the bottom rest on the top of the tach housing, keeping it level. I ran the coiled power cord to my Powerletted tank bag. I sprang for the blue display, and it seems bright enough to get my attention during daylight hours. Has anyone had the suction cups let go? They seem pretty grippy, and with the bottom of the unit supported, shouldn't get bounced around too much...the other option is using hi-strength velcro to fasten it to the top of the dash/tach housing, but then it'll be pointed downward. Will this affect the performance of the detector much? Using the suction cup mount makes it pretty easy to remove when I'm away from the bike, but I think I'll need something to cover it when riding through rain. Any ideas? Iceman_40 Posted August 2, 2006 Share Posted August 2, 2006 I did the same thing with my cobra one. Except I hardwired power for the detector up behind the cluster. I can't legally use mine in this area so I just stick it to the wind shield when it's legal. Hasn't let go on me but I'm sure my mount is different than yours and I had to bend it a bit to make it fit the profile of the wind screen. I use velcro on the bottom of the detector and top of the instrument panel as a secondary attachment. That works for me long enough when the suction cups let go. shovelstrokeed Posted August 2, 2006 Share Posted August 2, 2006 The suction cups will let go over time and they usually pick the worst possible time to do so. Check out the RAM mounting systems and look at the little Gold Wing mounts that use the bar clamps that hold your master cylinders in place. A shorty arm and one of the small mounting plates, a little 3M duo lock and your done. You can find the whole system at Gadget Guy. The Escort is not at all waterproof and it takes very little to destroy it. Gadget guy has boxes you can mount it in. I just put a shower cap over my farkle package which has a similar mounting system that includes my V1 with remote audio, XM SkiFi receiver and antenna and GPS V. It all hardwires to my tank bag, comes off with a twist of two wing nuts for security. Can't read the GPS or XM through it but no problems with the radar. And what's the URL for gadget guy? To maintain the thread, I've seen folks use just the suction cups to mount with. I've watched mine leap off the windshield of my car too many times to trust that.....especially because I'm well aware of what happens when something drops down by the steering head and prevents the front end from turning when you want it to............. Velcro support but still dropped it once thanks to "smooth" NJ/NY roads. It stayed hanging by the speaker and power cord luckily. OrganDonor Posted August 2, 2006 Share Posted August 2, 2006 If you do a search on eBay you can find aftermarket mounts for them... a BIG ASS suction cup that fits on the windscreen. You can also find the ram monuts on there, sometimes. i got my ram-mounts from cycle-gadgets, and it took FOREVER to arrive. One note about the ram mounts... I put on the cluth master cylinder (kinda like squareman's right sided mount), and when I lock the handlebars the cylinder mount hits my Bagster front clip. Squareman357 Posted August 2, 2006 Share Posted August 2, 2006 I use a Tech Mount. It mounts to the brake lever bracket, replacing the bolts with slightly longer ones and spacers. It has a flat plate with velcro on it, and the bottom of my radar has velcro on it. I usually secure it with an additional zip tie, but I've gone hundreds of miles without it moving at all. It looks like this: Here's mine mounted: Here's the website: TechMounts They also have stem mounts for the stem well, fairing mounts that replace one of the windscreen bolts and places the detector up higher, and several other mounts. You can also try RAM mounts, which the mount on the left (GPS) is a RAM mount with a U-bolt and two nuts going through the ball base. I use the Ram with a dremeled garmin76 mount. just made a cut for the phone plug and added a velcro strap. The only available real estate I had on my Helibars was taken up by a RAM mount for my GPS. I think the Techmount will work fine. I put on new tires in May and have less than 1k miles on them. I have also been splitting my time with hiking. So far this summer I have hiked Half Dome, Mt. Baldy, San Gogornio, San Jacinto and two weekends ago the highest peak in the lower 48 Mt Whitney. Say Hi to Julie for me. Hope you are enjoying Joisey.
