racer212
My 1999 Bird just clicked 33333 miles, and as if on cue, I developed a couple issues. My fuel gauge became erratic, then died completely. The next day, I drove to work, stopped at a stop and rob for breakfast. I turned the bike back on, lot lights and everything, but would not start. I pushed started it fine, but my speedo was all over the place. I've dealt with regulator rectifier issues on other bikes, and this seems like the same thing, but it may just be a battery. What's the word on the rectifiers on these bikes, good / bad / what? Anything else I should check?
Guest rockmeupto125
Your symptoms are from low voltage. That comes first from the battery, not the regulator. To start with, completely charge the battery and load test it. If its weak, replace it with a known good, fully charged battery. Clean your grounds, and then do a voltage test on the bike per the manual. You can't correctly diagnose the system with a weak battery to start with. And I'm moving this to the Garage. bajjer9
when mine started doing the same thing it turned out to be my regulator...i am using an r1 regulator now for almost 2 years with no issues
jrdxx
This may also be related to the wire loom connector issue already covered in detail on this site and others. Before replacing any hardware it might pay to open, clean, inspect, remate and weatherproof the connector.
racer212
Being a newbie, can you? cover the last two topics for me? R1 regulator, wiring loom issues, what?
demon
The trouble with the wiring loom is where the factory test connector is. It's only used to test the wiring at the factory and isn't used after it leaves Honda. It's wrapped up in electrical tape on the left side of the bike under the tailsection at the very front where it meets the frame. Some people have had this connector corrode and it messes up your ground circuit. I think on the BIRD site from England they have a sticky on this subject with pics and the fix. jrdxx
Here's a direct link to a writeup on the wire loom issue: http://www.bikersoracle.com/blackbird/foru...light=wire+loom It is in fact a test connector; I was under the impression that it was a conection that corroded, but that is not the case...anyway, my '99 has not yet started to misbehave. I just hope I can remember to check this area if it ever does.
