Two4One
Let me set the stage. A few weeks ago I had an accident in which the forks were bent. I replaced them with a used set, took it for a test ride and all seemed right with the world, she was smooth as ever. Fast forward to about a week and a half ago. I started to notice vibrations coming through the bars and also through the foot controls. This happened out of nowhere! I had no problems whatsoever from a vibration standpoint. Here's the thing, I have Dunlop 208's on the bike which now have over 3400 relatively hard miles on them (they were installed new from the dealership where I bought it). I have checked the front tire for the dreaded "cupping" characteristic but I haven't been able to detect anything out of the ordinary. I did pull of a few high MPH wheelies a couple of weeks ago which brought the chirp and tire smoke when I brought it down. Could this have caused the tire to start cupping? Based on other threads, Dunlops are a bad choice for this bike. I'm trying to eliminate any further problems related to my crash. I'm hoping it's just a coincidence that my tires went bad right after I repaired the front end. I have an almost new Diablo Corsa from my 1000RR sitting at home, should I throw it on and see if the problem goes away or look elsewhere first? Thanks for your help! bajjer9
my bike was this way when I first bought it...it had dunlops on it with no visible cupping but based upon the reports of a lot of guys I opted to replace them with pirelli diablo tires. the vibration and high speed wobble i had, vanished completely...I now use michelin and still dont have any vibes...when it comes to this bike I wont put dunlops on ever again! Two4One
Thanks ALOT for your reply. I'm going to change the tire tonight and see what happens. The buzz is annoying! It's weird how you can't even see anything wrong with it but it still causes problems. Oh well, never again on the Dunlops!
Two4One
Well it certainly helped although I still have vibrations. I guess I have to check the friggin' bearings now. My accident continues to plague me!
Skull
Could you have thrown a wheel weight when you came out of the wheelies?
Two4One
Actually no, I had two weights on since I bought it and they're both still there. I'm starting to lean towards a bearing problem although there are no rough spots when I turn the bars on the center stand.
Pete in PA
Any wreck that bends the forks you need the check the wheel bearings and the steeringhead bearings.
CALCXX
Does the engine sound any differant? CCT will bring on a new buzz.
Two4One
There is a slight change at startup but nowhere near the "can of marbles" sound that has been associated with the CCT. Clutch noise I'm assuming. There is no notching in the steering bearings at all. I just checked that on Tuesday. Is it possible to damage a bearing without feeling it in the motion of the bars? Yes it is.... Try it with someone lifting up the front wheel. Try by turning the yokes, not the handlebars. If it doesn't go easy and smooth, you have a problem. I could not turn mine at all this way, and no problem when I gripped the bars..... When I replaced the bearings I was shocked to see what they looked like. All over the bearing house you could see and feel the imprints of the bearing-balls....
