Fork seal help...

Rider99XX

Recommended Posts

While washing the XX today I noticed the left fork seal is leaking  Not bad but I don't want it to get bad. Fork oil is not running down the fork yet. Also my steering head bearings are notched and need replacing so I thought it would be a good time to do both.

Here is where the help is needed.

Fork seals - Are they pretty straight forward? Besides the fork oil, is there anything else that needs to be replaced? My wife rides with me quite often, actually 99% of the time, any suggestions for the forks reguarding two-up riding?

Steering head bearings - Same questions as above 8)

I am mechanically inclined and do all my own wrenching on all my vehicals, just never needed to do much of anything to my XX. After all it's a Honda.

Fork seals are very straightforward. You can either buy/borrow the cool tool for seating them or simply use a piece of pvc and the old seal so you don't damage the new one. Make sure you spend a moment checking the fork tubes to make sure there are no burs that caused it in the first place, remove them with emery cloth. Also, if you're doing one, do the other at the same time with new fork oil

The steering head bearings - IF I do mine again I'll go with tapered as they're much easier to adjust and stay better. I got my last pair from CBR bearing company in San Diego - great place to work with. They are also very straight forward, the onlt tricky things there would be removing the old ones (if they are rusted in place) and getting the torque right. No need to fancy meters and such to get the torque right, just snug them down and test ride it, then go back and make small adjustments. Also make sure you lube them really well.

Good luck!

Thanks Steve, I appreciate the advice. CBR Bearing Company? I'll have to check them out and I'll go with the tapered bearings.

James....a man must wheelie from time to time....it tends to tighten up things that tend to sag with time
