CCT removal question.

I have a new CCT to install. The manual says to make the key tool and use it to remove the old one. Do you need to do this if your installing a new one. I think I read on here not to take the key out of the new one before you install it. I could use that if you can remove it from the new one. Any advice. :?:

Don't bother.

The way it was explained to me was that the only reason the manual says to rewind the existing one is for re-installation, which you ain't gonna do.

Just pull the old one out, install new, remove key.

this device is sprung.

the key, winds up a little thing that extends into the engine and locks in contracted.

the manual suggests that you contract this thingy before de-installing.

and contract the thingy of the new one before installing.

then once installed, unwind the key to uncompress or extend the thingy.

some folks have done this de-install / install without the key.

if you got a key, yah might as well.

clear as mud i know.

btw, don't just pull the key out, the little thingy will unwind quickly and sometimes stick in an extended position.

spoken from a true un-mechanic perpective

ps they key is not the 'key' to uninstalling this device as it seems the manual is telling you. bolts holding it to the engine are.

Go with Redbird's advice, and try your best to ignore XX's

Thanks - I figured you didn"t need to wind it to take it off but I wanted to be sure. Mine's not too noisy yet as the bikes only got 16k on it but I thought I'd change it while I had the bodywork off for some maintainence work.
