Current leak test

Trying to remember how this works. Does this sound right:

1. Multimeter set to DC amps.

2. Positive test lead on battery negative terminal.

3. Negative test lead on bike frame/grounded part.

4. Reading < .2 mA is acceptable.

Sound about right?

I'm getting a reading of 0, which I hate, because there is

no way to distinguish between a no leak, and me just not

doing the test properly. :???: I'd feel more confident if I read

something. If I turn on the headlight during the test, should

I definately get a reading?

That set up sounds right to me. Anything electrical you turn on should give you a current reading. You should get a little something from the clock, but your meter may not be sensitive enough to read it.

in order to measure current you need to be in series with whatever your measuring...I am not sure what your trying to measure but since the frame is connected to the negative side of the terminal you wont get any readings...are you trying to test current drain with the bike off?...thats what it sounds like to me...if indeed you are you must put the meter either in series with the positive side (red lead to + post, neg lead to + cable) or in series with the negative side (black to - post, red to - cable)...just remember that current is measured in series and voltage/ohm are measured in parallel

wow guess that electronics degree has finally paid off!! ;)

You guys are right of course. I didn't read the hook-up closely enough. I was thinking he had the cable off and was hooking the neg. lead to the neg. batt lead.

Sorry about that.
