Well, I finally went and done it. I installed a Delphi Roady XM Radio.

It took me awhile to get the installation done but alot of thanks goes to Rick (Hobicus) for posting what he did. It helped alot. I made a few modifications and actually purchased a mounting bracket for it.

This is where I decide to mount my inline amp.

The antenna is on a metal plat that came with the mount but I made a custom mount so it sits on the rear of the bike.

Nothing attached to the body of the bike that wasn't already there. The pictures will follow next week.

These just a few pictures. Showing how it looks at night with 2 different display colors.

Orange which matches my console.

Cool!! Glad I could help. I've moved mine from the tank to the triple tree, and am interested in what you did for the mounting antenna. For the most part, mine just works, but once in a while it cuts out due to the antenna. Wouldn't mind improving the signal if possible.

Mine cuts out every now and again, but it's only for real brief moments, unless i'm in a densly populated area.

I have my antenna velcroed to the top of the tail, how much more open can it be??

Does anybody know if they make one of those short rubber antennas for the XM radio???

I think you're right Chuck. A metal base would probably make it function 100%, but I get good reception without it.

I mounted my antennae on my guage cluster just above the speedo using double sided tape. I get the same reception as I did with it on the tail......a few short cut-outs under large overpasses and when there is a tall bulding next to me, to my south. Other than that, it's perfect. YMMV.

I made a mount for the receiver out of polycarbonate that places the unit just above the stem nut, but mounts to the tank because I didn't like the idea of it rotating. I really like this placement because the unit is just out of my peripheral vision (hidden by my chin bar), but can be seen with the slightest bow of the head allowing me to see it and the road at the same time.2004822813022105267102.jpg

Here's the mount without the Roady. I mimicked the stem nut, so it didn't look too obtrusive with nothing on it, although I rarely ride without tunes anymore. I have been asked if it was a steering stabilizer once already. :???: 2004825871794506939416.jpg

Here's a side view. You can also see the in-line volume control (little, black, sort of kidney bean shaped thing in the bottom center of pic 2) that I added before running a headphone extension line to exit from below the seat where it meets the frame. 2004826919981600504867.jpg

Don, I think the antennae you describe is available, but I don't think that they are ground-plane independent either. Not 100% sure, though. Even if so, where would you put it?
