Well the second one with twice the dye is only marginally darker.
Ordered some black stain to hopefully darken it up.

Took the top out of the mold on Friday.
Flipped over to the pretty side.
I thought it looked pretty good. A few very small voids on the edges but easily repairable.
But over the nexxt few days it got quite a bit lighter and I decided it was too light.
I think is was a good first effort but not exactly what I was looking for so today I poured a second one with more dye.
In a week I'll know if I hit the right color. In the mean time I'll be building some of the other molds.

Finally got started on the countertops. I decided to pour a piece to test the color and water amount. Poured the test top yesterday. Went pretty well. I need to use more water nexxt time to get it to flow better. I used the max amount recommended but doesn't seem like enough.
I started by making a form out of Melamine coated particle board. The plastic coating makes the finished product very smooth and it releases nicely from the concrete. It's pour upside down so the surface against the mold will become the top.
The raw edges of the form are covered with clear packing tape so they don't absorb moisture and swell. Since this is a test piece, I may have to use it again and I wanted to keep the form in good shape.
Even got to use my new Yellow caulking gun.
I sat it on the garage floor and shimmed it level
Quikrete just came out with a mix specifically for countertops. It's supposed to flow better and shrink less than standard mixes.
I hope they're right.
To mix the concrete I bought a small Harbor Freight mixer on sale for $99. You could mix by hand but that seems like a lot of work. :icon_snooty:
I did put some charcoal dye in the mix but less that recommended as I plan on using a black acid stain on the surface later.
I poured out of the mixer into a bucket and then transfered to the mold.
You then need to vibrate the mix so it flows into all the corners and removes the air bubbles so the finished surface is as smooth and possible. This is my High Zoot tool. I put my jitterbug sander (with no paper) in a HD Ziploc bag and pushed it right into the mix. Seems to work great.
When the form was about 2/3 full I added some welded wire (remesh) to add strength.
Add the rest of the mix and screed it off, cover with plastic and wait 72 hrs.
Nothing to it.
Actually, it was a lot of work but now that I've done it should get easier.
Hopefully Friday afternoon when I pop it out, all will be right with the world.
Then some sanding to pretty it up and some stain to get the finished color right and some sealer to keep looking new.

I have a tube of Kwik Seal Tub & Tile Adhesive Caulk that came with the house. This is what I use for the vinyl next to the tub?
That's what you'd use to seal the joint between the tub and floor after it's glued back down.

Seems like I've seen glue specifically for seam repair. Have looked at a big box store or a flooring store?

Justin, if you want some "professional" looking doors, you might look into buying doors. I know a guy how has used these guys several times.

Yes, that is correct. There is an adjustment on the lever that controls how far the lever is from the bar but that doesn't adjust the engagement point.

What chain lube is best for the Bird?
That depends. Are you running Dunlops or Michelins? What pressures? What brand and weight of oil do you use? How often do you change it?

I have a dual tank Kinetico that recycles based on flow rather than time. Uses way less salt that way. Call me and I'll give you the full poop.

It sounds like the thermowell, the temperature sensor/probe on the back of the control that screws into the tank is encrusted and not getting an accurate reading or the calibration on the thermostat is going bad. At 15 years, you've gotten your moneys worth from it.
+1. At 15 years, it might be too late for a flush to help. It's lead a good life, it might be time to put her down.

Like I've said several times in this thread, things are moving slower than I'd hoped, but they are moving.
Finally finished up the stair handrail. I've got WAY too much time in it but it turned out awesome.
Sent it out and had it powder coated semi-gloss black then strung the stainless cable. That was a PITA job too, but I think it was worth it.
Just sent the Maple handrail to be clear finished yesterday.
All the the trim is in. That was a PITA. (seems to be a trend) Since I went with 1x4 Maple all the base had to be scribed to the floor and sometimes the wall. It's stiff enough that it doesn't conform to the irregularities like standard trim does.
The kitchen cabinets are in with some temp counters. Thinking of making my own countertops out of concrete. :icon_shifty:
We added rails and stiles to the back of the island to make it look more like the cabinets.
2 weeks ago, finished a cabinet for the AV equipment. Made it out of left over trim.
Just in time for the delivery and install of the home theater goodies.
I sold the XX to eliXXer so I went a little overboard. :icon_shifty:
I figured a motorcycle is a toy so that money should stay in the "toy" fund.
They put in the TV, an upscaling DVD player, and AV receiver with a 5.1 surround system and ceiling speakers with separate volume controls in the master bed and bath, office, and gay-rage. Also got a programmable remote that works on RF so I can take it out in the garage and control all the functions from there.
The fireplace will eventually get the same stone as on the ft of the house.
The new couch and chair.
Still no functional bathroom upstairs yet but soon. The rough in plumbing needs to be tied into the existing plumbing.
Got a new plumbing fixture quote. The old one was 2 years old.
Hope to get that ordered this week. Well, there you have it. Not gonna guess at a finish date again. Many have came and gone.
It's starting to look more like a house and less like a constructions site.

I had planned on using the acid stain anyway. It reacts with the lime in the concrete and because of the variations in density, it absorbs more in some places and less in others. Hopefully this will give is a variegated look. I was just hoping for a darker base color.
I want it to be multi colored as I think a solid color would be harder to keep clean and would show imperfections much more.
Paint or anything that forms a film will probably form a solid color and prevent the stain from reacting with the lime.
Just read some info that suggested that powdered dye can make it darker. I've been using a liquid dye. Oh well, gonna go with what I've got.
