    cleaning

hah! and get run over on my commute.... interesting metzler has this recommendation.... i'm on my 5th rear on this bike, and 3rd front, now at over 35k miles, never done this... I wonder if I can get more than 13,000 miles out of a front if I "run it in" properly  we'll see how these pilot roads do me

    cleaning

i remember a thread long ago on the vfr list talking about never using Simple Green on the swingarm, that it would eat thru it eventually..... so safely i use a little Simple Green but always use a spray bottle of water an water down the area that I used SG on.... thoughts?

    100W Headlight?

my high beam is a 90w white i've been running for about 34,000 miles. i can't remember who makes it, it's some no name brand cheapy, i figured i'd use cuz the high beam is easy to change out. who woulda known it'd last this long! i have a 2002 fi.
  6. yeh, that be me. sorry folks, www.imagestation didn't like my kids middle finger.... all fixed now
  7. if the key can't take the torque (is bending) then it's locked up. if it's not locked up, the key will wind it up. keep working at it, a skinny screwdriver won't help. I'll bet the little clip at the base of the cylinder is rotated slightly and preventing the barrel from turning and descending. trust me, this happened to me, i bent the key, then tried an eyeglasses screwdriver... if it's locked it's locked and you gotta get it unlocked, like the cat in the hat Sam i aM

  10. i did this too  if the cylinder 'exploded' outward, there's a chance it's kinda stuck, you just gotta screw with it, pushing, twistin, tapping and cussing and it will come back. additionally, there's a spring clip that needs to be aligned at the beginning of the cylinder, hard to explain, but if try to find what might be locking the cylinder out, you should check that clip too. on my oem after i removed it, i found that clip misaligned. i've got a 2002, ran it for 30k, changed the cct, and dont' detect any discernable difference between the 2 ccts. might be i'm lucky, might be the 2002 model? but i'm glad to have one in there now that has a rep for lasting a hell of a lot longer ;o)
  11. I'll check the pinhole out! Last weekend I let it sit, cap off the res for about 2hours. Last week it was definitely dripping faster, so the pinhole may be the trick... maybe it's plugged? thanks!
  12. well, not that I expected EVERYTHING to work perfectly after being run off the freeway on my bird, BUT since the crash my Hawkeoiler has decided to run continuously at about 1/3 the rate (like a leak). the pump is not actuated. there is no visible damage to any of the lines or pump or oil container i've diddled with the little stop valve thingy... so for now, i'm running it dry, and will try starting over. the bike ended on it's side, no oil leaked at the time of the accident except a little tiny bit that came out the pinhole on the resevoir. ideas? i'll take any thoughts at all to think this thru as i'm tired of moving the little piece of cardboard i have to keep under the chain now while the bike is parked at work!

    re GIMP bird

it's my understanding that the fi ecm will adjust for whatever the bike is breathing, drinking or exhausting within a fairly wide tolerance. imho
  14. chip at ronayers.com was telling me via email that there is no such part number and that he doesn't have access to a service manual. so I asked him to please try harder :???: figures you guys figure it out before! gotta love this list... thanks again
  15. it's alway a huge bummer when shit like this goes down... heart out to ya. if no warranty, DEFINITELY take it to another dealer for a 2nd opinion! that's a lot of money! you could almost buy another bike and keep the old one for parts!
  16. Anybody have the part# for the headset nut adjustment tool... the thingamuhjig that is like a socket? tia
  17. check www.ronayers.com for price, they're reasonable and well stocked usually. imho, i rode my stock chain almost 28k miles and NEVER once cleaned it. BelRay sprayed it about every 1k miles religiously. If you do clean it, just make sure you don't work the dirt and grime INTO the o-rings rather than off of them

    Brake pads

I like dem ebc hh's too  They did well during the fires. They did well in the rain last night. Maybe I should have used them and tried to stop last Thursday when I got broadside instead of trying to get out of the way.... hmmmm.... ... lotsa what if's... ... would recommend though

    Fuel Tank

duh, i guess i didn't read your post quite clearly, a power commander won't do you much good on a carbed bird :???: hey, how come i get better gas mileage with super unleaded? Is that another FI thing?
  21. XX

    Fuel Tank

can't answer your question about the tank but my daily commute is about the same and here are some suggestions: 1) super unleaded 2) keep your 17T oem front sprocket 3) a power commander would allow you to lean out your cruising ranges and squeeze that extra 10-20 miles out of your tank so you don't have to stop for gas in the morning AND at night the same day. Assumption: you don't want to have to ride slow Personally, I've done #3 and I like my 16T front sprocket  take care,
