JT gives the dimensions of their sprockets in their online catalog, but it can only be searched by application so that makes it *a little* time-consuming.

Can you share the application?  Or is it too obscure for a search?

It may be for a personal thingy he would just as soon us not know about. And with those specs, I’d just as soon not know.

While I've gleaned a lot of personal satisfaction from original jugs, there are many advantages to aftermarket.

You had to know that was coming, right?

I don’t think I have ever ridden anything with aftermarket parts. Sigh, guess that boat has sailed.

Are those jugs sleeved? (Old Hondas could be re-sleeved)

    No. Chrome-plated. Poorly.

Millennium Technologies from the land of cheese is your friend on chrome issue.

Yeah, that looks great, thanks!  Nikasil cylinder replacements seem to be the norm for this sort of thing, but it looks like the older bikes are SOL and newer cylinders that have to be machined to fit.

Again, I would like to keep as much original as possible, and the original jugs would give me great personal satisfaction. And they look to be very reasonably priced.

That'll buff out. Are the case threads damaged? Tap and die is your friend.

One of my next purchases is a quality metric set. Or at the very least find the missing sizes from the set I inherited from dad.

In the meantime, I pulled a cylinder and there is considerable flaked chrome in the bore. Another known issue of these old bikes.

  5. Interesting. Pulled the rubbers off the foot rests and found evidence of a pretty hard drop. Cleaned it up and it should work. I just need to keep an eye out for anything else like this.

When I bought the bike I sort of had an idea I was dealing with a pig with lipstick, but it ran fine, so I did not go into a lot of effort into inspecting it.

Got all the parts ready to go get powder coated.

I should start an oil thread.

    Here’s the thing about oil........

Remember waaaaayyyy back in the day how so many of us were overly anal about the brand, the viscosity, filters (best, worst, most economical) and change intervals?

How many of us ended up keeping those bikes? Krypt, for sure. Joe, duh. You? Me? Who else? Some fucking Randys from Australia?

Does oil really matter if you keep the bike 5 years, or low miles? How about high miles, so you end up with a bike with little resale value?

Do not get me wrong. I have used my share of high-end oil. Honda filters. Not so frequent changes. Once a year, more or less.

    Oil. Gotta have it.

The carbs should clean up pretty easily as long as they're not corroded.  Hook up a battery and fire that bitch up!

You had said something about your carbs not being stock; what's on it and is there a reason to swap back other than originality?  If it's not some kind of hack job swap just run with them.

I just got a set of Dellortos (thanks Bill). My intent is to get it as close to stock as possible. The air box on this series does not play well with others apparently.

Did you run the engine before draining?  Also, at what point during draining did you pull the sample; right after plug out, around half way drained, near end of drain?

No, the bike had been sitting for20+ years without the gas tank, the carbs were froze up, the battery was well, 20 years out of a charge.

It turns over pretty easily using a wrench on the generator belt shaft. I drained the oil and mixed pretty vigorously. I told Blackstone this.

It is very cost effective if you do it like I have been doing it for decades now.  A few tire spoons and a lot of sweat.  I also have a H.F. bead breaker that is also decades old but you can get around that if you have to.   Or you step up to a No Mar tire machine.  https://www.nomartirechanger.com/compare-models.html

Vern has a no-mar. I think he talked about getting rid of it at one point.

  11. Analysis of oil that has been in the motor since 1997-98. I am not a tea leaf reader, but it looks to me like a tear down and inspection. Last motorcycle engine rebuild I did was in 1986 on a sportster.

This bike does not use an oil filter. It has a mesh screen strainer.

  12. Cycle gear will do it while you wait. (Wheels off the bike) It is maybe $35 a wheel. I can gauran-damn-tee you BMW has figured out a way to make R/R as difficult as possible. That is not an unreasonable price for factory-authorized R/R. I have also bought tires there. As competitive as anywhere else, without going insane trying to find the very cheapest.

You may laugh, but you should check out the local HD joint.

Let me know if you decide to go to Good Times. I’ll pick you up and we can go to Tits R Us and grab a beer.

  13. I hear ya.

Today, for the first time in my life, I picked up my bike. From a shop. For maintenance. Brake pads. Flushing lines. Chain and sprockets replaced.

600 large, plus the cost of a couple beers there. (What a great place!)

I mean, I used to be a real biker. Now, not so much. The ride home was great. Loved the brake job, much better than I could have done myself, but you know, no grease under my fingernails. Tools not being used, no barn beer.

When I got home I planted some canna gillies for wifey.

...sitting in traffic for 2 hours in 98% humidity August heat with my friends on The Soo, as the locals call it, seeing the XX slowly fail was like watching a friend bleed to death.

The heat gauge was creeping up and the starter started turning slower....

    I kind of coasted s l o w l y into customs.

This has happened to me. Old battery, hot day, wreck on the interstate. Finally just pulled over at a high point until traffic cleared. Had to push the bike off.
